88TH INTERNATIONAL SIX DAYS ENDURO

struggled a bit at
this year's ISDE
but still posted
good times.
ride along some pretty intense
highway to get to his next technical check on time.
Brownie burned up his clutch in
the opening special test of the day
and when he got to the first technical check he replaced the clutch
plates. However, when he put the
pressure plate back on the clutch
he didn't realize that there was still
an old plate stuck to it, so when he
put it back together and pulled the
clutch it broke the pressure plate.
Brown didn't have enough time to
change the pressure plate before
he was due to leave the check, so
he rode out of the check, laid the
bike over and walked back to the
pits to get another pressure plate
and tools. By the time he made
the change, however, he was
about 15 minutes late, which no
one thought he could make up.
However, Brownie's Baja training
must have paid off, as the Tennessee rider made a wicked dash
along some pretty sketchy roads
to make it to the next check with
one second to spare!
Doctors James McGee (left) and
Monte Sorem volunteer their
services on the US team.
"It was a wild ride," Brown said.
"I had to change out a clutch and
I struggled with that. I didn't get
any trail points but there was a
couple of times I was going 170
km/h or more. Every road I got
on I had it going as fast as the
bike would go. I don't know how
it worked out, but it did."
DOCTOR, DOCTOR
To be successful, the U.S. ISDE
effort requires dozens of volunteers to make the operation
run smoothly. People who take
off work or spend their vacation
time to help out in the pits doing
various jobs. Two volunteers with
very specific jobs are the Team
USA doctors, James McGee
and Monte Sorem. McGee is
an ER doctor from Pennsylvania
and he's also the medical director for MX Sports and works with
the GNCC Series, while Sorum
is a chiropractor from Washington State. Both are avid dirt bike
enthusiasts and love helping out
at Six Days. Sardinia marked McGee's sixth ISDE, while Sorum
has been to four events.
"You never know what to expect at Six Days, but typically I
address sore muscles, hamstring
strains and just aches and pains
in general," says Sorum.
