Team USA actually led on a score
of 13 over the 14 of Germany, a
17 for Belgium, a 19 for Australia,
then Italy's 22, France's 26, and
Great Britain's 32.
For the US, however, the problem was, to this point, Belgium
had, by far, the lowest score as a
throwaway in the first two motos.
USA's throwaway was Tomac's
16th place, Germany's was a 39
by virtue of a first-turn crash that
claimed the team's Open racer
Dennis Ullrich (and also put him
out of the final moto of the day,
effectively ending Germany's
chances in the overall placing),
Australia's was a 20th by Open
racer Todd Waters in the first
moto, and Italy's was a 13th by
Lupino in the first moto, but Belgium? Their throwaway to that
point was the eighth-place finish
by De Dycker in moto one.
At the start of the final moto of
the day, that changed, as Desalle
went down in turn one, dislocating his shoulder and scoring a
DNF (40th). That became the
new throwaway for Belgium by
default.
Germany's Max Nagl snatched
the holeshot over Dungey, Russia's Evgeny Bobryshev, Cairoli,
Paulin, Searle and Belgium's De
Dycker. As for Barcia, he went
down in turn one with Desalle.
