ROUNDS 12-13/SEPTEMBER 14-15, 2013
NEW JERSEY MOTOSPORTS PARK/MILLVILLE, NEW JERSEY
AMA SUPERBIKE
P74
AMA NATIONAL GUARD SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP
Tight at the top: Cardenas (36), Hayes (1) and Herrin (2) battle.
Roger Lee Hayden chases Cardenas in Sunday's National.
he said. "Proud of my team for
putting a good bike back underneath me. I can't say I'm happy,
just proud. A job well done. I feel
good about the way I put the day
together."
Not surprisingly it was Herrin and Cardenas again going at
it tooth and nail on the final lap
battling for second, over threeseconds back from Hayes. The
two swapped the position a few
times and Cardenas was trailing
coming into the final set of turns.
Everyone wondered why Carde-
nas didn't serve up payback to
Herrin for Saturday's rough pass
in the final turn.
"It wasn't possible," Cardenas
said. "In that section of the track
I'm not very good at it. I think
Josh is a little bit better than me
there, so I couldn't do it like he
did it yesterday. I just couldn't. I
was hoping maybe on the draft,
but it wasn't possible."
Needing only a 10th-place or
better at Laguna Seca to win the
championship, Herrin was looking ahead to the series finale in
two weeks.
"It's been pretty much since
2008 that I've been trying to get a
championship," Herrin said. "I'm
not there yet, but it's getting closer. Today I went into the race really nervous; I'm not going to lie.
I was thinking about the points
and what I needed to do to get
a good enough gap in the points
that I didn't have to worry too
much over there and I think we
accomplished that. It's not going
to be easy to finish in the top-10
at Laguna, but it's going to be a
lot less weight on my shoulders
to know that that's the goal." CN
