VOL. 50 ISSUE 37 SEPTEMBER 17, 2013 DER Martin Cardenas (36) leads Danny Eslick (23), Josh Hayes (1), Josh Herrin (hidden), Roger Lee Hayden (54), Aaron Yates (20) and the rest of the Superbike pack in race one at New Jersey Motorsports Park. take full advantage when breaks go his way. He's only finished off the podium two times all year. And he's hungry. You get the distinct feeling that Herrin sees an AMA Superbike number-one plate as his ace in the hole when it comes to gaining employment in 2014. When someone is racing to keep a place on the grid, wherever that may be, they tend to take big risks for big rewards. "I've been on Yamaha for eight years and haven't won any championships," Herrin said. "Cameron [Beaubier] is doing good so I'm kind of thinking he's wanting his turn, but if I win a championship somehow it would be hard to believe they would get rid of you, but we're also exploring other options in Europe. That's where I want to go ultimately so that might happen too." The pass Herrin made on Cardenas in the last turn to win Saturday's race was one part adrenaline, one part desperation. And it worked. The points he gained for winning combined with what he took away from Cardenas made a huge difference in the championship picture. Not to mention what happened to Hayes on Saturday. More on that in a moment. Herrin also enjoyed another element that often goes along with winning championships - and that's a little luck. In Saturday's race something happened with the electronics of his machine at the start and the bike wouldn't rev once in second gear. Herrin had to actually pull off to the side of the track, turn off his bike and remember the restarting procedure, in order to recycle the electronics. It happened to Hayes' bike as well. That put both riders to the back of the field. Herrin got started again and was working his way through the field, but Cardenas had a decent lead and didn't look like he was P69 Briefly... Josh Hayes reached a milestone in Sunday's race in New Jersey. He earned his 40th-career AMA Superbike victory. Hayes is second all-time in AMA Superbike wins. Mat Mladin leads the category with 82 wins. Also in the top five all-time are Miguel Duhamel in third with 32 wins, Ben Spies fourth with 28 and Fred Merkel fifth with 20. Josh Herrin scored his fourthcareer AMA Superbike win on Saturday in New Jersey. That ties him with Jamie James and Bubba Shobert who each had four wins in the class. It was a tough day for Yamaha mechanics, but the team's riders came through in spite of suffering crashes to finish on top in Friday's preliminary qualifying at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Yamaha Superbike rider Josh Hayes set a new AMA Superbike qualifying record, when in the closing minutes of the session he lost control in turn two and crashed at a high rate of speed, heavily damaging his factory Yamaha R1. Hayes' time from Friday held, due to cool conditions on Saturday morning's session. He remained perfect in Superbike pole positions this year having won all seven. Hayes now has 29-career AMA Superbike poles. That's second all-time to Mat Mladin's 63. Hayes will have the chance to earn his 30th-career pole at Laguna Seca. Josh Hayes is heading off to France this week to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, September 21-22. Hayes is slated to team with Australian Broc Parkes, Slovenia's Igor Jerman and South African continued on next page
