P30 IN THE WIND ishes in 1949, riding Harley-Davidsons. His best career result came at the Milwaukee Mile in August of 1949 when was fifth in the AMA 15-Mile National. Lewis later went on to race stock cars. Friend Russ Thompson conveyed one of his favorite stories about Lewis: "He went in the service and he was stationed somewhere in the Ozarks of Missouri. There was a local track and a cycle shop. He got to hanging around, watching and listening and learning. He got to know the guy who ran the shop. The guy had a rider who rode for him at the local track. He had a new bike on order for the guy. Herb asked what he was going to do with the old bike. The guy said nothing, so Herb asked if he would work on it and keep it running if he could ride it in the races. The shop owner asked if he had any experience. There was a Har- ley ad framed on the wall. Herb was in the ad. He pointed at it and told the guy, 'Yeah, a little. That's me in that ad on your wall.' "The guy flipped out and told Herb he could ride the new bike. Herb told him no, that wouldn't be right by his regular rider, he'd be happy with the old bike. The guy agreed and Herb took it and won almost every race the rest of his term in the service!" Larry Lawrence EDWARDS SAYS THANKS A s a way of saying "thank you" to the servicemen and women of the United States Armed Forces, Colin Edwards' Texas Tornado Boot Camp and Gibson Art Designs have collaborated on an original piece of authorized motorsports artwork. All proceeds will go to Race For The Wounded, a grass-roots non-profit organization that supports veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. "I've spent a lot of time with the men and woman of our armed forces; the words proud and brave are a constant," Edwards said. "I'm honored to be involved with Race For The Wounded. I look forward to the future and doing anything I can to help."
