"I knew swooping around the
outside [on the start] was going
to be a little bit slower initially because it's longer to go, but there
was that really gnarly road crossing plus that really steep dike that
you had to slow down for, and after the dike it was really sandy,"
Pearson said. "I thought, 'Man,
everybody's going to have to get
their momentum back up.'
"Sure enough, I hit my line perfect and swept around the outside and bagged Ivan going up
the hill [after the bomb]. I knew
when they turned the corner to
go up the hill, they wouldn't have
very much momentum [and] sure
enough, I passed him probably
going 25 miles an hour faster
than he was going!
"So it was good - it worked out
about like I thought it would."
Pearson ended up less than
a minute behind Caselli at the
finish, 3:51:38 to 3:52:30, in
his one-time ride aboard the
