THE AMA KENDA BIG SKY OFF ROAD NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHI
Serena Newby claimed a numberone plate in the Girls division.
A trio of Yamahas followed
Mullins across the line, although
some distance back. Obermeyer Yamaha's Brad Bakken
won the battle for second, passing Am Pro Yamaha's Jordan
Ashburn on the final lap to do
so. Earlier in the race, Bakken
passed Ashburn's teammate
Ricky Russell, who ran a strong
second over the first few laps,

something like this, which is a lot
like Loretta Lynn's, where national champions can be crowned in
amateur classes is a great thing."
Stavish also praised the venue.
"To have the race here at a place
like Big Sky Ski Resort is fantastic,
it just doesn't get any better," adds
Stavish. "It has all the amenities,
it's fairly centralized in the United
States and it's reasonably cool in
the summertime, and it's a great
vacation destination."
This year, Mullins took on the
elements and the competition
and came away with a relatively
easy win, looking quite comfortable in the extreme altitude and
on the extremely rocky terrain.
In fact, he was barely sweating
when he crossed the finish line
after three-hours of negotiating
the mountainous terrain.
"The only problem I had all
race was when I came into the
rock garden section and there
were lappers in my usual line, so
I tried to go straight up the rocks
and I got hung up about halfway,"
said Mullins. "I lost about five
seconds there but I was able to
get going again without killing my
engine or falling over."
"Overall, the course was
good," added Mullins. "It wasn't
as tough as I thought it was going to be and it was fun, with lots
of cool trail, although there was
some pretty difficult areas too.
But overall, I think it was great."
