The only thing
hotter than Ryan
Villopoto at Lake
Elsinore was
Ryan Villopoto,
who didn't seem
affected at all by
the 100-degree
temperatures.

Briefly...
There were some rumors floating around the week before at the
Utah National that the Lake Elsinore round might be cancelled,
while there was (and still is) property issues with the Lake Elsinore
Motorsports facility and little had
been done to the track in preparation for the National at that time.
But, the race did come together
quite well at the last moment. MX
Sports brought in its own crew
and event manager Tim Cotter to
help out, including Jeff Russell,
who normally designs tracks for
GNCCs. He spent much of the day
behind the wheel of a water truck.
The Marc Peters-built track, which
was already considered too long,
was shortened slightly and tons of
mulch was added to the topsoil.
Amateur riders were allowed to run
on the course earlier in the week
to help mix it in with the natural
soil. Like last year, opinions varied widely among the riders as to
the racecourse. Chances are that
a round of the Nationals will not
return to the facility next year, and
MX Sports has already said that
no more infield tracks (like Miller
Motorsport Park and Lake Elsinore
Motorsports Park) will be added to
the upcoming schedule.
JGRMX/Toyota Yamaha's Josh
Grant was flying in the first 450
moto. He grabbed the holeshot
and led for a number of laps. He
eventually finished third behind RV
and Ryan Dungey, but he did not
return for the second moto. "I got
the holeshot and used all the intensity I could to stay up with those
guys at the beginning," Grant said.
"It was super hot and I just fell apart
at the end of the race. After that
