AMA Supercross Adopts Lower
Sound Limit for 2027
T
he 2027 AMA Supercross
Championship has offi-
cially introduced the new 109 dB
sound limit, down from the cur-
rent 112 dB maximum, a change
that has been known about for
quite some time. The new stan-
dard will take effect at the open-
ing round of the Monster Energy
Supercross Championship at
Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Cali-
fornia, on January 9, 2027.
The revised limit, announced
in the 2027 AMA Supercross
Rulebook released on November
2, was developed through coop-
eration among the SMX League,
AMA Pro Racing, the AMA and
participating motorcycle manu-
facturers.
The three-decibel reduction
is intended to lower noise levels
at racing venues and surround-
ing communities while helping
preserve access to motocross
tracks and riding areas. The
change also brings American pro-
fessional racing closer to interna-
tional sound standards, allowing
manufacturers to develop motor-
cycles around a more consistent
set of requirements.
All manufacturers competing
in the SMX World Champion-
ship have agreed to meet the
new standard for 2027. The
SMX League and its partners
will provide technical guidance
to teams and riders, particularly
independent operations, ahead
of the season opener.
The new sound limit will apply
throughout the 2027 SuperMo-
tocross World Championship
season, including AMA Super-
cross, AMA Pro Motocross and
the SMX postseason.
