MOTOGP HITS THE
ISLAND IN 1989
The first Australian 500cc
Grand Prix in 1989 was one of
the greatest races in World
Championship history. In front
of a sold-out crowd of 93,000,
Wayne Gardner (2) gave everyone
what they wanted, triumphing
over Wayne Rainey, Christian
Sarron and Kevin Magee (5). Here,
Gardner leads Magee, Tadahiko
Taira (21) and a very young Mick
Doohan (at rear) on his way to the
famous victory.
