it was hot and that was a super-technical section. I just came up a little short." Smage was in the hunt all day, and after a slow start to the year, the rookie Pro has turned up the heat during the last few months and is proving that he will soon be a force to be reck- oned with in national competition. "It felt good to be up there with those guys," Smage said. "I am not used to this kind of stuff at all. This is my first time here and it has amazing grip and huge rocks. You can do a lot more than you think you can here, and I am not totally used to it yet." What hurt Smage the most, was dropping five points during the morning qualifying. "It was just a mental mistake," Smage added. "I took a three in a section that I cleaned twice yesterday. I just got a little off line and got stuck. Then I had two other single dabs in easy places." Wenger topped the Expert riders with 31 total points, with Casper finishing with 32 and Davis with 35. CN DONNER SKI RANCH TRUCKEE, CALIFORNIA RESULTS: AUGUST 5-6, 2006 EXHIBITION: 1. C Y C L E N E W S • AUGUST 23, 2006 51 The U.S. Trial des Nations teams were announced before the event and the men's team, which will represent the United States in France this September, will consist of Colorado's Geoff Aaron, Floridian Chris Florin, Cody Webb and Keith Wineland, with Patrick Smage as the alternate. The Women's team will be Colorado's Sarah Duke and Massachusetts's Louise Forsley. Each year at ETdE, a raffle is held to help raise money for the U.S. TdN effort. This year, three TdN replica "skunk" trials hel- mets were donated by the AMA for the raf- fle. Also, several industry businesses donat- ed discounts on product, including bikes, to be raffled off. Cody Webb offered a day's worth of riding to the highest bidder and one lucky rider paid $250 for the honor of riding all day with the 2006 ETdE Champion. Cody Webb's father, Kip Webb, came close to winning ETdE in 1984, but lost out by a single point to Cagiva-mounted Mike Lauxen. Nine-time U.S. National Champion Geoff Aaron was not in attendance this year because of a scheduling conflict. Aaron spends nearly every weekend performing his Extreme Riding shows around the coun- try and this year's ETdE event fell on the same date as one of his shows. Bernie Schreiber heads the list of most ETdE wins, with eight, while Colorado's Mark Manniko and defending champ Geoff Aaron come next, with four wins each. The third annual West Coast Youth Nationals were held on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before ETdE. The overall champions were Renata Delaney (Kids class), Ty Cullins (Novice class), Krist- jan Thordarson (Sportsman class), Chase Harker (Intermediate class) and Andrew Oldar (Advanced class). Briefly... (Clockwise from top) Patrick Smage was in the hunt right down to the last section. He ended up third. Keith Wineland kept the pressure on winner Webb all day, finishing just one point back. Webb's reward for winning the 37th El Trial de Espana.
