posting 3-2-1 tallies. Team Green's Zach Bell rang in at third with 2-3-5 comple- tions. One of the final runoffs of the week belonged to Justin Barcia, who swept the title aboard a Honda in the 85cc Stock (12-13) class ahead of Kawasaki captain Blake Baggett, who scored 2-2-3, and KTM's own James Justice, with his 4-3-2. "I've been working hard and it paid off," Barcia said. "I got the holeshot and pushed for the first half of the race and set cruise control for the rest." Tension ran high going into the final moto of the Womens 99-205cc Over-12 class. Tara Geiger and Jessica Patterson each held a first- and second-place finish, but Suzuki's Leah Cantrell was not going to give in, despite her 3-12 standing. The trio locked into a fierce battle for the 15- minute duel and, in the end, Geiger's first- place victory secured the championship with her 2-1-1 finishes, followed by Patterson's second-overall 1-2-3 score, and Cantrell's third-place 3-12-2 tally. Kawasaki's Mini superstar, Adam Cianciarulo, aced the 65cc Stock (7-9) class following his final 2-1-1. "I thought I did pretty good," Cianciarulo said. "I pushed the first couple laps and just rode conservatively the rest." Conner Pearson won second with 1-3-3, followed by Thomas Covington 5-2-2. Team Green added another name to their list of champions when Loretta's podium rookie Zach Bell took the winning class sweep in the 65cc Stock (10-11), fol- lowed by Suzuki's Colt Nichols and KTM's Cooper Webb. Webb carried the championship title home to Newport, North Carolina, in the 65cc Modified (7-11) class with 1-1-2 fin- ishes but Cianciarulo and KTM's Kody Kamm kept him honest throughout their weeklong showdown. Cianciarulo's final score was 4-2-3, just ahead of Kamm's 2-7-1. Heavy rain moved in while the 51cc (4- 6) Pee Wees were on the track, but the muddy conditions didn't stop Sean Cantrell from thundering into first place with a class sweep. "It was pretty muddy out there," Cantrell said. "I almost fell all over the track." The 51cc (7-8)-class title went to Cobra's Coleman Martin with a 2-2-5, following Blake Green's heartbreaking 1-32-1. Motos were canceled on Friday when torrential rain, thunder and lightning made an appearance. The rain was very heavy and most expected that Saturday's motos - which would include all of the motos missed on Friday - to be muddy. But some- how the track turned out perfect. Turns out, the track is built for these annual fluctuations in the weather, as the whole surface has been raised several feet to prevent flooding, and a complex drainage system has been installed under the track. "When it rains, they just cut grooves in the track to lead the water to those drains," explained MX Sports referee Doc Holliday. There was plenty to do at the ranch for the week outside of the races, including Camp Loret- ta's, which is a day camp for kids, the Yamaha/MotoTees fashion and talent show, and the FMF World Karaoke Finals. Also, Air Nau- tiques held wakeboard demos on a lake a few miles from the ranch. The 250 A Champion Broc Tickle had a scare when he took a look at his bike before his third and final moto. "I took my bike off the stand and the shock was blown out," said Tickle. "I pushed down on it and it was like a pogo stick. They had to get my practice bike out and get the shock off of it at the last second." Jeff Emig's return to the ranch has convinced a lot of ex-pros to give the race a try, including Trampas Parker, Doug Dubach and Denny Stephenson. There are so many now that it might eventually warrant a format change. "I hope all of the guys come back," said Emig. "I hope if there was any skepticism about coming back and racing here, I hope they saw how much fun I had coming back here and doing the Vet classes. Maybe we can pump it up and Racer Productions will have to have a Vet Pro class and give these Over-35 guys a break." Most of the manufacturer's had their 2007 bikes on display, including the debuts of much-awaited redesigned versions of the Suzuki RM-Z250 and KTM 250SX-F. Ricky Carmichael was on hand to talk about his roll in the development of the new Suzuki, which he says follows many of his philoso- phies on chassis design. Some of the 2007s rolled on to the track, too. James Stewart and Ryan Villopoto took the 2007 Kawasaki KX450F and KX250F on to the track for some laps during intermission, and soon Carmichael and Tedesco appeared out there doing the same thing on their RM-Zs. Tedesco rode the Carmichael-replica RM-Z450 and Carmichael rode the new 250Z. AMA Sports' Ryan Holliday announced the win- ners of the coveted AMA Sports Horizon Awards during Saturday night's closing cere- monies. The Horizon Award, which goes to the amateur rider showing the most promise in the Pro ranks, went to Josh Hill. Also, the Vet Horizon Award went to Pennsylvania's Jimmy Evans, who rode his Cernic's Kawasaki to a perfect 1-1-1 score in the Over-25 class, and the Youth Horizon Award went to Suzuki's Jessy Nelson, who won both 85cc (7-11) titles. Texas' Sean Hackley was named the first-ever winner of the Toyota TMX Moving Forward pro- gram, which awards a factory-supported pro ride to a promising amateur. Toyota had narrowed the list down to 20 finalists during the week. Hackley had bad luck keep him out of the title chase, but he put in inspired rides all week, including a win in his final moto in the 250 A class, to claim the award. Hackley will now ride for the Motoworl- dracing.com/PPG Yamaha team in the 2007 Supercross and motocross season. Briefly... Continued from page 29
