UPCOMING ROUNDS Peoria, Illinois August 20 Bridgeport, New Jersey August 26 Castle Rock Race Park Castle Rock, WA Round 5 August 13, 2006 AUGUST 23, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 40 AMA Grand National Singles Championship Kevin Varnes returned to action as he received his doctor's release on Wednesday and immediately hopped on a jet. Varnes' return was mixed as he fell in his heat on the TT. But the Daytona winner did qualify for Sunday's Short Track National, where he fin- ished 15th, completing 21 laps. "All in all it was a good weekend for us. Every- thing worked good," said Kenny Coolbeth after a pair of sixth-place finishes. "It was all about the starts this weekend. It was definitely a one-line deal. I tried the outside in turn one a couple times. It was kind of sketchy because somebody could run up on the inside of you. It's good. We're good in the points, the overall. I don't know where we are in the singles points. We're doing all right. I'm happy with everything. Last night the track was totally different. It was so slip- pery last night. We put a setup on the bike for today for slippery racetracks. Then it was like glue out there. The track was so fast. We just changed a few things and we progressed all day." "That bike is just flat working. It was great to be home," said Joe Kopp. "That's what I was telling myself all the time I was charging up there, that I need to get on the podium because I'm home. It just kept driving me. It was awesome. It's great to be home. It's hard not to get on the podium and get one of these trophies when your picture is on the trophy, and we got it. It's me and Jake battling it out now in the points." "My last win was in 2004. It's been almost two full years without a win," said Johnny Mur- phree. "We won one a year in '02, '03 and '04. It feels really good to get one in. I rode here on a 60 in 1988. I rode a little minibike around here before they changed the track. I won on the 60 too. I was the only guy lapped on the track last night and got first place today. I got my man- hood back after being lapped. I fell off in the second lap and got lapped on Saturday night. My little buddy Shaun [Russell] fell off, so I wasn't last. It wasn't great. I made a few mistakes off of two. A couple times I saw a wheel underneath me. I thought 'you're gonna have to stuff the crap out of me to get me off the bottom.' I knew as long as I stuck on the bottom, they weren't going around me. I've been waiting for something good to happen for so long. We came here yesterday thinking we were going to set the world on fire. I just stunk up the place. I made it into the main event, but I wasn't fast enough to do anything. Even after I crashed I got up and was losing ground. It's been like that every week. It's just a sliver off the pace we need to be on. Sometimes it's a big chunk. I don't really like that too much. There's nothing we can do about it. We work our tails off, week in and week out like that." Andrews Brothers racing/Mayberry Builders' Joe Hernandez capped off a perfect weekend with his win in the Pro Sport main. Just like last night, Lancaster Harley-Davidson/ Mike Hack- er's Cory Texter and Rod Lake Racing/Hlebo Brothers Suspension's Rod Spencer filled the podium although in reverse order. This time Texter was second with Spencer third. Briefly... MY OWN RACE 14 Jake Johnson 5th Place "I was kind of bummed out that I didn't have a front-row start," said Jake Johnson. "I knew it was going to be tough. Luckily, a bunch of guys just dropped out. I was able to move up. Towards the end I started putting in some good laps. I started getting that chatter figured out. Everybody had a little bit of chatter. I kind of got it figured out and closed up on those guys. By the time I closed up on them, there were only two or three laps left. It was tough to pass. You didn't really make anything happen without it being too risky. It was good. I saw that Joe [Kopp] was only a couple spots in front of me, so I knew that I was all right there. I just wanted to make sure that I got out of here today with some points." 27 Rob Pearson 7th Place "We squeezed in a main event both nights," said Pearson. "We were starting too far back. Between yesterday and today, I think we may have passed the most guys. Today we had a pretty good finish, seventh. I think our times were competitive to be upfront with the front group. It feels good that we are running as well as we are. We'll just have to work on trying to win a heat race and sit on the front row in the main event. Everyone was going fast so it was really tough to pass. The holeshot was a big key here today. I was trying to be aggressive in the main event. We tried to set our motorcycle up to pass, because we knew we were coming from so far back. When I got out there by myself, I could tell I could have used a tooth off or something to go faster. The track was so abrasive. I felt like if we could put a knee puck on we could of just drug [sic] out knees around there." 17 Henry Wiles 8th Place "What really hurt me was when I got behind Kevin [Varnes]," said Henry Wiles. "Everybody else seemed to get by him pretty quick and it took me a few laps. When I tried to work around him a cou- ple other guys got by me. So I had to work around them too. The track was really hooked up - I think that's why there wasn't a whole lot of passing. It was so hooked up and it's hard to get a good run on anybody. No one was really dusting it off or anything. Props to the Castle Rock group - they really made a nice track for us. I started on the third row and got eighth. I worked my way for- ward. We were having problems with our frame bike, so we chose to ride the DTX bike that we rode last night. It worked fairly well. 88 Raun Wood 9th Place "I struggled with suspension a little bit," said Wood. "I was fum- bling around with that in my heat race - it started to pogo a little bit. I stiffened it up for the main event, but needed to go a little more. Our heat race was good. You had to push a lot harder in the main event and I just didn't have it. It started going away towards the end there and it made the suspension work a lot harder. I needed a little bit more tuning on the suspension. I was running fifth for a little bit. I kind of worked myself back a little bit. I couldn't keep the momentum going as well as I wanted to. The bike was kind of fighting me a little bit so I ended up back in ninth. I'm not disappointed by any means. It was a setup error. I was here by myself today, so I don't have anyone else to blame." Russell (hidden) hounded Murphree (20) for the entire 25 laps, hoping for a mistake that never came. Johnny Murphree celebrates his Castle Rock win.
