Honda-mounted Team K&N and Yamaha- mounted Backmarker Racing filled the top two positions in the series standings going into the Oak Hill round of the schedule, the two teams having accounted for all three of the previous series wins. And the two teams ran first and second after the first lap of the Oak Hill race. However, both teams quickly encountered problems, with Backmarker Racing pitting just three laps into the race with fuel-line problems and then later with a broken shifter. Team K&N's problems came at the one-hour mark and were more difficult to repair: a broken reed and a split exhaust pipe. The Tulsa-based team lost 11 laps in the pits, making repairs, which effectively put them out of the running for an overall win. During the third hour, the GMAN 2 team was also forced to pit with a broken reed on their Honda RS85. Although the problem had reared its head much earlier in the race, it wasn't immediately diagnosed. In the meantime, Venom Racing had finished the first hour in fifth overall on its Honda RS80, b u t h a d b e e n m a i n t a i n i n g a s t e a d y a n d consistent pace, which was exactly what it was going to take on this hot and humid day. And with all the problems out front, Venom Racing moved into the lead during the second hour. It was a lead they would never give up. "We were consistent and didn't have any mechanical problems," said Steve Guynes of Venom Racing. "The bike was running a little hot, so we just short-shifted it all day. I think everyone had problems today because of the heat, but we got lucky and had a clean race." In the end, Venom Racing finished with a four-lap lead over Hambone, which had also maintained a steady pace. Trinity Racing Too ran a solid third for most of the race, but almost gave it up because of a late-race problem. Fifteen minutes into the final hour, the team broke a shift linkage and had to come in for repairs. The team ended up taking third overall by 12 seconds over Team K&N, which turned in an incredible performance to come back to fourth from so far down. Fifth overall and first in the Formula Five division went to Excel Racing, on a KTM 65. Thunderdonk Racing claimed its third class win of the year with a 13th-overall finish and further extended its lead in the series standings, while SDM Racing took its second win in a row in the Formula Six division with a 14th-overall finish and crept closer to STD Racing in the class standings. Indiana Dirt Track Lawrenceburg Motorcycle Speedway Lowe Returns to Lawrenceburg! BY JOHN SPURRIER LAWRENCEBURG, IN, JULY 7 A fter missing the start of the season due to major surgery in April, Sam Lowe came back to the Lawrenceburg Motorcycle Speed- way and celebrated his return by winning the Pro-Am feature race. The race took several tries to get started. On the first try, Joel Brown left too soon, bringing out the red flag. He was sent to the penalty line. On the second attempt, Coy Matthews and Tyler Shepard jumped the gun. They joined Brown on the penalty line. The third try seemed like a charm until Joey Ratz fell in turn three, bringing out the third red flag. Ratz remounted and went to a new penalty line. The fourth try was the charm. Lowe got the holeshot and went wire to wire for his win. Pat Behrle went quickly from his penalty-line start to second place, where he finished. Shepard passed Matthews and Damon Stapleton to finish third. Ra t z w o n t h e C o m b o f e a t u r e , o v e r Shepherd, Stapleton and the rest of the pack. David Wolf won the Open A feature for the sixth time out of seven starts. Kevin Hilbert took second place, ahead of Berry Benkert Jr., Joe Matthews Jr. and the rest of the field. Behrle won the Over 30 feature, ahead of Ken Maynard, Billy Stepp, Joe Matthews Jr. and the rest of the field. Jim Beck won the Over 50 feature for the second straight week. Paul Myers took second ahead of Joe Matthews Sr., Butch Lowe and the rest of the pack. In the smaller classes, Mason Nusbaum dominated the 50cc class, ahead of Grant Stapleton, Brayden Ryan and Mason's brother Jaydon Nusbaum. Brandon Wilhelm won his sixth 60cc feature race out of seven starts. Skyler Beal was once again the only rider able to stay on the same lap as Wilhelm, finishing about half a straightaway behind the leader. Holly Butler and Samantha Wilhelm finished third and fourth, respectively. Wilhelm returned for the 80cc feature and went wire to wire over Andrew Butler, Shelton Stapleton and Chris Avra. Brandon Brown got the holeshot and the win in the 100cc feature, ahead of Andrew Butler, Ben Baker, Trent Shepard, Joe Matthews Sr. and Joey Westhider. CN RESULTS 50: 1. Mason Nusbaum; 2.
