AUGUST 16, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 74 BY CINDY GIBSON BLOUNTVILLE, TN, JULY 8-9 T he 22nd annual Kawasaki Team Green Ten- nessee State Championship returned to Muddy Creek Raceway in full force, as athletes from across the country took advantage of their last chance to go up against fellow com- petitors before the big showdown at Loretta Lynn's. With Muddy Creek's track being similar to Loretta's, the Victory Sports event tradition- ally attracts top amateurs who are preparing for the national competition. A nearly full gate of some of the best B riders in the country lined up for the first gate d r o p o f t h e e v e n t . Kawasaki teammates became rivals as Austin Stroupe, P.J. Larsen, Trey Canard and Davin Price battled for the lead position in the 250cc B class. Stroupe came out ahead in the hotly contested first moto; Canard and Larsen charged across the finish line just ahead of Honda's Troy Balsters, w h o c l a i m e d f o u r t h . Ty l e r W h a r t o n represented Suzuki in fifth. Larsen challenged Stroupe throughout moto two and finally won, but his third-place finish in the first moto wasn't enough to earn the championship. Stroupe's 1-2 scores topped Larsen's 3-1 finishes, while Canard's 2-5 tallies placed him in the final podium position. Price, Wharton and Balsters rounded out the overall top five. The top 125cc B-class riders were Stroupe, Canard, Larsen, and Wharton, along with Team Green warriors Michael Hall and Malcolm Stewart. Suzuki jockey Ryan Sipes swept the 125cc Pro class for the overall championship, but not without challenges from Team Green's Ricky Renner (4-2), Honda pilot Broc Tickle (3-3), Yamaha's hometown Pro Kevin Walker (5-4), and Sean Hackley (2-7), who rounded out the top five aboard a Honda. The overall 250cc Pro win went to Tickle, followed by Sipes, Hackley, Saylor and Renner. Kawasaki captain Adam Cianciarulo traveled f r o m t h e S u n s h i n e S t a t e t o a c c e p t h i s u n c o n t e s t e d c h a m p i o n s h i p w i n i n t h e Unlimited 65cc class. Cooper Webb gave it everything he had but had to settle for second with consistent 2-2 finishes. Shane McElrath rode his Lem up to the final podium position. All eyes were on the line as the top teens of the Supermini class took off and charged up the "Stairway to Heaven." Justin Barcia was Honda's dominant force in moto one, but not without a contest. KTM's James Justice and Honda pilot Kyle Peters gave Barcia a run for his money in moto one, but they couldn't take the win away from him. Blake Wharton made up for lost time during moto two to finish in first place. Barcia remained on top of the podium with his 1-2 finishes, and Blake stepped up for Suzuki in the second-place spot. Justice settled for the third position. Victory Sports will continue its 20-year celebration when the Thor United States Mega Series resumes at Birch Creek MX in Danville, Virginia, September 2-3. The series will merge with the Parts Unlimited Carolina Ultra Series at Muddy Creek Raceway, September 8-10, in conjunction with the Suzuki Southern Challenge. Kawasaki Team Green Tennessee State Championship Thor United States Mega Series Round 12: Muddy Creek Raceway Team Green Dominates in Tennessee Kawasaki's Malcolm Stewart finished among the top competitors in the 125cc B, Four-Stroke Schoolboy and Schoolboy (12-15) classes during the 22nd annual Kawasaki Team Green Tennessee State Championship at Muddy Creek Raceway. PHOTO BY CINDY GIBSON BY RYAN EVANS COSTA MESA, CA, JULY 7 B ryan Yarrow added the coveted Fair Derby trophy to his mantle by winning all five of his races, including the main event, at the world-famous Costa Mesa bullring oval. Yarrow and Bobby Schwartz both entered the main event with perfect scores. Yarrow won the draw and selected the pole. Schwartz chose gate two. Joining them in the main were Shawn McConnell in gate three, Josh Larsen in gate four, and Bobby Krips on the outside. Larsen was the fastest starter and came across Yarrow entering turn one. Larsen didn't turn hard enough and drifted wide as they exited turn two, and Yarrow shot up the inside on the back straight. Larsen had to stay outside in turns three and four, which allowed Yarrow to stay on the preferred inside groove. Yarrow surged ahead at the end of lap one, leaving Larsen no other choice than to tuck in behind, in hopes of a mistake on the part of Yarrow. That mistake would never come, and Yarrow was first to the checkered flag. Larsen settled for second, Schwartz finished third, McConnell was fourth, and Krips finished fifth. Yarrow began the evening by defeating defending National Champion Chris Manchester. Eddie Castro won the restart of race two, but Gary Hicks was forced to withdraw after his bike was bent on the original start. Schwartz defeated Larsen in race three. McConnell ended the first round with a win over Krips. Round two began with Yarrow beating Larsen for his second straight win. Manchester, returning from a back injury, was leading race 10 when he lifted in turn four and went down hard. Manchester was helped off the track, but he would not compete the rest of the evening. Krips easily won the restart. Schwartz beat Castro for his second win in the next race. McConnell finished the second round with his second consecutive win. Yarrow began the final round with an easy w i n t o r e m a i n p e r f e c t f o r t h e e v e n i n g . Schwartz kept pace with Yarrow by winning his third race, ahead of Krips and McConnell. Randy DiFrancesco beat George Fox in race 17. Larsen brought the heats to a close with a victory. Brian Starr and Dale Facchini finished first and second, respectively, in a runoff to determine the final two spots in the semis. Schwartz made it four in a row by winning the first semi, with McConnell following him to the main event. Yarrow won the second semi, ahead of Larsen, to remain perfect entering the main. Krips held off Castro in the last-chance qualifier to take the final slot in the main. Billy Braden led the Support main for three laps, but Eloy Medellin had steadily whittled down his lead as they took the white flag. Braden drifted wide in turn two and then slid off. Braden's fall handed the lead and the victory to Medellin. Vince Giamformaggio finished second, Braden was third, and Bryan Buffington was credited with fourth.
