The thing was, the most com- fortable seat I've sat on for the last three days was the XR 750 seat. I was complaining about my truck seat on the way over here. Every time I sat down, my back was killing me. For some reason, on the motorcycle seat, it didn't hurt. I was lucky that way." Johnny Murphree has struggled with the twins this year, although things appear to be improving, but he is looking to big things in the four upcoming singles races. "I'm still making some decent strides; I'm really looking forward to next week," said Mur- phree. "I just want to keep hammering away. I had a crummy start in the heat race. I came through pretty good and had some decent lap times. It was the same deal in the main event. Those guys were all doing good up in front of us. We just need to keep things rolling in our direction so we can give them the whooping that they've been giving us." Tim Eades is having a career year, having qualified for six of the nine nationals so far, with tonight's results his best yet. "I've got to give a lot of credit to my dad, once again," said Eades. "We 'grenaded' a motor at Hagerstown. He's been thrashing around, yanking a motor out of this bike and put- ting this motor in this frame and getting this other one out. He's also got the little bikes ready for Washington. Thanks to my dad and, really, my whole team. They've got really good equipment and they've got an okay rider." Farley is as close as Rich King gets to a hometown track. "I came out of it pretty good," said King. "You want to win. In the heat race, I ran Jared down and thought, 'I've really got something for these guys.' In the heat race, I just had a lot of trou- ble with turn one. I think I'm just destined to get third. There's been three years at the Farley race- track and I've got three thirds. Third at every race- track wouldn't be bad, but every once in a while, you want to win." Chris Carr discussed his attempt at the world land-speed record: "Our next trip to Bonneville is for the meet in September - we'll go from Spring- field to Bonneville," said Carr. "Hopefully, we'll put that thing in the record books. I just hit 300 right before Hagerstown. They are back working on the dyno and getting the thing prepped. They are trying to coax a little more horsepower out of it. Maybe we'll mess with the gearing a little bit. We're hoping for a five-mile run up on the race. We got two 300s in 2.6 miles. We'll turn the rev-limiter up and change the gearing and put a little more ponies in it and see what we can do. I wasn't at 300 very long. The thing that I noticed the most was the decelera- tion when you put your main shoot out at about 250. You go through one G of deceleration and that's putting on some brakes right there. I've never felt anything like that before. It was pretty cool. It's a lot different than when they slam on the brakes on an airplane when you land." Last week in Hagerstown Custom Chrome's Gary Rogers' season came to an end. Rogers caught his foot entering a turn and, even though he didn't fall, he broke his ankle and also suffered ligament dam- age. The injury was severe enough to require sur- gery. Chris Hart has taken over Rogers' bike for the rest of the year. Hart just missed the main twice, with a fourth in his heat and a third in the semi, missing by one position each time. Briefly...
