"I would catch him going into turn three," said Coolbeth. "He would just get it turned way quicker than me and get off the corners better for some rea- son. I don't know why. We had to play catch-up, and it kind of hurt us. We're just so even here. You can catch him, but it's hard to pass. Everything worked good. The team worked good together and the bike worked good. I can't complain." Hacker 's race was almost over before it started, as clutch problems forced him to ask for two minutes before the start. "On the practice start, my clutch cable messed up and kind of freaked me out a little bit," said Hacker. Repairs were made, and he slipped into his starting spot. "I noticed that Rich [King] was peek- ing up on the inside of me," said Hacker. "I was having a hard time get- ting through one and two. In three and four, I could ride that high line and felt like I had a pretty good drive there. In one and two, I was slipping and sliding and chasing the rear end. When Rich peeked underneath me, I brought my line down a little, using the brakes going into one and two. Eventually I stopped seeing him; I'd see him in the apex and then I'd pull him. Eventually I stopped seeing him and just tried to hold what I had. I didn't really feel like I had anything for the leaders anyway. It was fun to try to get on that podium. The podium is good; last weekend I didn't make the main, so the podium is good." Mees was fifth, holding off Schnabel, but a couple of slips by Schnabel left him fighting with Smith for sixth. "I made a few errors," said Schnabel. "I just got into the corner too hard. It was a typical J.R. Schnabel move. I get in there and start battling and want to go faster." After a great start, Suzuki jockey Johnson quickly dropped to eighth, where he finished. Reggie Amos Custom Homes' Tim Eades recov- ered from a terrible start to finish ninth, over Custom Chrome/Zanotti Racing's Jethro Halbert. Defending Hagerstown winner Joe Kopp struggled all night and ended up in 11th. Harley-Davidson of Wausau's Willie McCoy won the Hard Charger Award with his 12th-place finish. Highland Harley-Davidson & Highland Riders of Somerset, Pennsylvania, put up the $200 for the award. Eaken Racing/Dick Ford/Mike Meyer 's Ricky Marshall finished 13th after a bizarre semi saw him make a last-lap pass of Sammy Halbert to get into the National. SJS Racing's Paul Lynch, Coziahr/National Cycle's Johnny Murphree, Schaeffer's Harley-Davidson/ Scott Powersports' Raun Wood, Big Ron Racing's Garth Bastian and Reiman's Harley-Davidson/Gutteridge Harley- Davidson's Josh Toungett filled out the field.
