AUGUST 9, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 58 BY GARY CRIDER MONTEAGE, TN, JULY 2 T he third annual Fourth of July event at TMT MX Park is known by many names: Appropriate to the big fireworks display the night before the race, the official moniker for the Champion Cycles-sponsored event is "TNT at TMT," but for riders who have quali- fied for Loretta's, the event is advertised as the "Amateur National Warm-Up." Most folks think of it as an Independence Day celebration tailored for motocrossers and their families. The event was also identified as round 12 of the Southern All-Stars MX Tour, round seven of the Southern SAS Spin-Off Series, and round one of the Tennessee Summer Shootout Series. Unfortunately, the event title that cannot be overlooked was: "Last Race Ever at TMT." Track owner Andy Baggenstoss is moving on to other projects and obligations. During the day, Baggenstoss received many thank-yous in gratitude for the four years of memorable racing at his top-rated facility. The track's closing day was a well-run show, with more than 370 riders (representing 10 states) participating. Representatives from Cycle News, Castle Powersports and FMF were on hand, providing give-aways, prizes and support. Erv Braun and Gary Avans were the announcers. Georgia's Jase Lewis turned in fast, flawless rides and won all four of the 250cc A and Four- Stroke Pr o m o t o s a b o a r d h i s H o n d a o f Houston/FMF/PR2-backed machine. There w e r e s o m e e x c i t i n g m o m e n t s w h e n h i s eventual podium mates, Kentucky's Justin Sipes and Florida's Ricky Renner, put some pressure on Lewis during the day, but Lewis' domination was not seriously threatened. C h a m p i o n C y c l e s / F o x / S c o t t / L i q u i d Pe r f o r m a n c e - b a c k e d D e r e k Ro g e r s w a s another of the day's top performers, winning all but one of his six motos to take home the gold in the Schoolboy Two-Stroke, Four-Stroke Amateur and 125cc B divisions. Earl May of Florida pulled off a stunning repeat of his 2005 TNT at TMT performance with another eight-moto sweep in the Over 25, Over 30, Over 35 and Over 40 divisions. Kris Swaney and Bobby Wilson put some serious pressure on May, but at the end of the day, Swaney and Wilson had to settle for the runner-up honors in their respective divisions. Some of the closest racing of the day took place in the 85cc (7-11) and 85cc (9-13) d i v i s i o n s b e t w e e n N e w J e r s e y 's Nick Desiderio and Ohio's Egan Rosell. The Suzuki- powered duo traded the lead back and forth and ran wheel to wheel for much of the day. Their exciting battle ended in a points tie in both classes, with each rider taking a class win. Fly/Dunlop/FMF-backed Desiderio earned the tie-breaking win in the final 85cc (7-11) moto with a last-lap pass over HRP/Scott/Troy Lee- backed Rosell. Similarly, Rosell's tie-breaking win in the 85cc (9-13) class was garnered via a last-lap pass over Desiderio. Bell's Powersports/Amsoil-backed Daniel Baker romped to perfect scores in the 65cc (10-11) and 65cc Modified contests. Judson Wisdom finished second in the opening motos of both of these classes, but he was sidelined for the day after a crash from second spot in the final 65cc Modified moto. T h e n c h e c k o u t www.CycleNewsEvents.com EVENTS Over The Hill Gang Motocross I-5 MX Raceway Dan the Man's Plan BY CHRIS CUMBO GORMAN, CA, JUNE 25 D uring the sizzling Over The Hill Gang summer series, Over 45 Intermediate Dan "The Man" Leahey, on the line, made his intentions clear when he said: "I plan to win. I've got that cool SixSixOne radiator-for-the-body suit on." When the gate dropped, Honda 450 rider Murray Armstrong got the best jump, even though top points leader Mark "The Shark" Jones had lined up way on the outside, planning to swoop around the other five riders. "I went too deep," Armstrong said afterward. "I was too excited, and Leahey and George White shot by me." Jones passed Armstrong and then, later, White on the step- down double. He could see Leahey only a turn ahead. "We were all over the place, and we both got tired at the same pace," Jones said afterward. "We also had to work around the lappers." After a perfect start, Leahey went uncontested from wire to wire in moto two. Over 45 Novice Reid Franke got off to a great start - until he approached the second turn. "I was in fourth gear," Franke said, "and I remembered the old track design. It was too late. I went straight, and Art Flores followed me." Kim "Not Slow" Kinslow inherited the lead. Ty Oshiro, who's had a good run of wins at Gorman, followed Kinslow closely for only a couple of laps before taking the lead and the win. In moto two, Franke controlled the first turn with Wesley Dean. Franke then held the lead for a lap while Oshiro worked on passing Franke on the outside of the tight S turns - which he did, for a perfect 1-1 tally. Over 30 Novice rider Andy Laviolette, on the Bridgestone Honda 250cc four-stroke, sent his girlfriend, Megan, over to hold a spot next to "Bad Brad" Huber. "I'm gonna line up next to him," Laviolette said. "I'm here to have fun. He's the guy who's been beating me every time he shows up." "When we came over that hill," Huber said later, "Laviolette decided to do a speedway maneuver, and I had nowhere to go but into his bike. I had to then pass all the [Over] 38 Novices." Fr e d Winemiller tried to jump past Dan Selesnick for second, but he couldn't make the turn, and Selesnick won moto one after a stall by early leader Steven Hedge. Huber got the holeshot again in moto two, and held second "until Selesnick chewed past me," Huber said. Winemiller got out to a substantial lead. He was in his own class in moto two, having fun over the jumps and extending his lead to 30 seconds. Over 38 Novice rider Dan Creed started in fifth and charged through the pack to finish first in moto one, with Phil Guthrie finishing second. However, moto two was different. "I stalled after leading when I came up on a rider after five laps, in the S turns; I almost launched the bike, and I had to find neutral and start it again," said Creed, who handed the overall to Guthrie.
