AUGUST 9, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 56 BY GREG ROBERTSON HESPERIA, CA, JULY 2 T he triple-digit temperatures weren't the only thing cooking at Competitive Edge Motocross Park during the GFI South's Shirt Werx/AC Racing/Maxima-sponsored Stars and Stripes Extravaganza Motocross. YZ250F- mounted Travis Baker heated things up with a 2-1 performance to top the always-competitive 125cc Intermediate ranks. Cameron Rodriguez put his Honda out front in the first moto, with Buck Ford, Tye Hames and Ryan Kirk in close formation. Hames was the first to make a move, getting around both Rodriguez and Ford by the start of lap two. Baker gated midpack and was picking off his competition at a steady rate, closing to Hames' back door on the penultimate lap. The white-flag lap was a sprint to the finish, with Hames holding off Baker for the win. Ford was all by himself in third, and Rodriguez held off Nick Sanchez at the checkers for fourth. Baker and Hames went at it over the lead as soon as the gate dropped for moto two. The lead duo swapped the top spot back and forth as they distanced themselves from the rest of the field. It was anyone's guess as to who would prevail in this great battle until Hames s t a r t e d s l o w i n g d u e t o b i k e p r o b l e m s , eventually pulling off the track. Baker ended up greeting the checkers with an insurmountable lead to sew up the overall. Ford put in a great ride, coming from out of the pack to finish in Hernandez (KTM). 80 BEG: 1. Casey Huntley led the first two laps of the opening 250cc Intermediate moto before Baker dropped him back to second place. Baker continued on for the win, with Huntley keeping him honest. Ford argued with Daniel Hendrix over third, with Ford prevailing. Moto two was one of the best races of the day, as Ford, Hendrix, Huntley and Baker were inseparable at the front of the field for the entire moto. Ford kept his RM-Z450 mere feet ahead of Hendrix for the hard-fought win. Baker's close third-place finish captured the second-place trophy, over the 4-2 of score Hendrix and the 2-4 tally of Huntley. The KTM-mounted Siminoe brothers out of Reno, Nevada, had a successful day in the Mini ranks. Older brother Aaron aced both motos in 80cc Intermediate racing. Andrew Silverstein was runner-up to Siminoe in both motos, ahead of Josh Greco (4-3) and Keith Robinson (3-4). Ty Siminoe was equally impressive in the 60cc Intermediate class, as he, too, posted a perfect 1-1 showing. Seth Harnishfeger (3-2) and J.T. Jake BY CLAY LIGHT WASHOUGAL, WA, JULY 2 I daho's Ben Evans and Washington's Dan Moore were among the select few riders to card two or more overall wins at the opening round of the AMA Pacific Northwest Champi- onship Series, held at Washougal Motocross Park. Evans, who made the trek from Boise, Idaho, was the lone three-class winner, picking up the overall 125cc, 250cc and Before The Hill Intermediate-class victories. Moore was also impressive. Although the Suzuki rider didn't replicate Evans' win tally, he did score a pair of overall victories. Moore took advantage of a last-lap crash on the part of Oregon's Kevin Rookstool in the second 250cc Pro moto to pick up a moto win and the overall victory with a 3-1 tally. Then he swept both Over 30 Pro motos to take home the top money on the day. Rookstool was on a roll until his aforementioned crash, as the Honda rider from Klamath Falls, Oregon, won both 125cc Pro motos and was well on his way to a sweep of the 250cc class when he fell less than half a lap away from the checkered flag, eventually finishing sixth. Evans' first overall win came in the 125cc B class, perhaps facing his toughest challenge of the day in Team Green's Chris Johnson, who was the only rider on this day to beat the Honda rider. Johnson took advantage of a poor start on Evans' part and then rode flawlessly for the remainder of the moto to finish ahead of Evans. However, Evans came back strong in moto two, overtaking Johnson and Tevin Tapia to pick up a moto victory and securing the overall win. Overall, it was Evans (2-1), Johnson (1-2), Tapia (3-3), Chris Howell (4-5) and Mitchell Rask (8-4) at the top of the 25-rider class. Evans had an easier time taking his dual 250cc B-class wins, as he got around early leader Erik Meusling and then proceeded on to victory, finishing ahead of Rask and local Kawasaki rider Chad Smith. Evans made short work of the second moto and took advantage of a poor start on Johnson's part to take an easy win. While Johnson did move into second place in the later stages - where he'd finish - Johnson's first-moto 10th-place finish dropped him to fourth overall, behind Evans, Rask and Arlie Southard, but ahead of Howell and 27 other riders. Rookstool has been on a tear of late, and on this day the southern Oregon speedster was looking for some extra seat time before the upcoming AMA National to be held here. In both 125cc Pro motos, Rookstool jumped out front early on. Tony Boughten grabbed the initial lead, but Rookstool worked his way past on the opening lap and remained there to finish ahead of Boughten and Oregon's Pete Sannan. Moto two was all Rookstool's, as the Honda rider opened up a large advantage on Boughten to score the overall win. Boughten (2-2), Sannan (3-4), Sam De Atley (5-3) and Ricky Yorks (4-6) completed the top five. Sixty-eight riders competed for 42 positions in the 125cc C final, which was won by local Honda rider Alec Watts. He grabbed the lead at the start and stayed there to finish ahead of Austin Rose and Stephen Butler.
