"It's good to be back," Stewart said. "It's been a hard road to get here, having all of the injuries that I've had - just been struggling. I thought we were ready this year but things have kind of snowballed after Mt. Morris; it's felt like it's been problem after problem since High Point. We tested a lot the last couple of days prior to this and got the bike working better, so I felt much stronger this week. I'm looking forward to having the week off and get back to being healthy." For Carmichael, getting sec- ond after working so hard and having the win slip out of his hands was a huge let down. "To come back and make the pass and to have just a lap and a half to go is disappointing, but life goes on," Carmichael said. "James rode good today - I knew he was going to be good here. I don't think he's ever lost here, so his streak goes on. All we can do is regroup." Despite having his chance to run with Stewart and Carmichael, Reed was content having gotten back on the podium in third. "I've been off the podium for two weeks in a row which sucks," Reed said. "I hurt myself at Unadilla and have been taking it easy. This weekend, I tried to step it up as much as I could; I felt like I had a good pace in the first moto and sec- ond moto, and I'm a little bummed that I fell in the first moto. I bent my thumb back and just tried to fight as long as I could in the second one. Man, these guys [Stewart and Carmichael] were setting a good pace and was there for a couple of laps - it was fun." Washougal MX Park Washougal, WA Round 8 July 30, 2006 AUGUST 9, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 24 2006 Toyota AMA Motocross Championship Presented by FMF MY OWN RACE: 118 Davi Millsaps 4th (4-6) Place Team Honda's Davi Millsaps has changed his reputation as a poor starter to a great starter. For the third race in a row now, Millsaps has been nailing holeshots one after the other, and he got another one at Washougal. In the first moto, Mill- saps grabbed the holeshot but gave way to Chad Reed before the first lap was over. He went on to finish a strong fourth behind Carmichael, Stewart and Reed. But Millsaps couldn't repeat the holeshot in the second moto and it cost him. On the first lap, he got held up when Kawasaki's Michael Byrne crashed in front of him, resulting in the Honda rider rounding the first lap in 20th place. From there, however, Millsaps put on a strong charge and worked his way up through the pack, passing Kevin Windham on the 11th lap to take sixth for fourth overall. "He's got confidence now for the out- doors," Honda team manager Erik Kehoe said. 15 Tim Ferry 5th (7-4) Place Tim Ferry is another rider who is stocking up on confidence. The Unbound Energy/Moto XXX Honda team rider continued to post good results at Washougal, especially in the second moto, where he came up from eighth to finish fourth, passing riders such as Travis Preston and Kevin Windham along the way. Ferry said that it is now his goal to finish in the top five every week. 14 Kevin Windham 7th (5-7) Place The SoBe/Samsung Mobile/No Fear Honda team had high hopes for Kevin Windham, who has had a lot of success at Washougal, but not this time. Windham had his chance to run with the leaders early in both motos but couldn't quite hang with the pace, dropping back to 5-7 moto finishes for seventh overall. "I struggled all day today," Windham said. "I don't feel like I rode good all day. I'm disappointed and don't know what to say. Obviously, the day didn't go as planned; it's so funny that the tracks that I typically do good at now seem like I'm doing worse, and I'm doing better at the ones I don't like, like Southwick. I don't know; I've got to stay focused and keep moving forward. It's a tough class and easy to get lackadaisical. I'm disap- pointed with myself today because when I had a problem, I focused on the problem and didn't focus on the good things." 32 Ryan Clark 13th (18-12) Place Team Solitaire/Bikesellerz.com Honda's Ryan Clark rebounded from a poor start in the first moto with a strong showing in the second. "I had a good start and was battling in ninth, 10th and 11th place with Daniel Sani, Michael Byrne and David Vuillemin, but with less than two laps from the end, I got a flat front tire. I dropped back and that was kind of disappointing. I have to get consistent with my starts; I got a good start in the second moto, but the first moto was brutal. It's hard to come back. Honestly, this is the worst roosts of any track, if you're not upfront, that hill after the second turn is like darts thrown at your chest. I was a little too squeamish going up the hill. I got the worst start and didn't make it any better by being relaxed up the hill." 27 Nick Wey 14th (12-38) Place MDK/Motosport Honda's Nick Wey had a terrible day that saw him drop from sixth to eighth in points. "Today didn't start out so awe- some," Wey said. "The end of the second practice I kind of knocked myself real dizzy; I wasn't even sure if I was going to ride. Dr. Bod- nar told me that it would not be a good idea, because he said I prob- ably had a stage-two concussion, but I needed to do what I could. The first moto I got a little dizzy towards the end and slipped back to like 12th or so. The second moto I was feeling a little better - probably like in 10th or so and was moving forward - and I guess the hub broke, so kind of like the chain broke." Honda's Davi Millsaps scrubs his way to a strong fourth place finish.
