After a dreadful set of motos at Unadilla the week before, the Unbound Energy/Moto XXX rider was pleased !o Bet back into the top l0 in Colorado and secure his loth overall selus in the standints. "Overall, I was pleased with the day," Summey said. "l made too many mistakes in the llrst moto, and I think my gas was start- ing to boil, which made the bike try to stall, but I was happy to 8et loth. ln the second moto, I was tetting a little winded and I reserved myself a little too eart, which allowed [Antonio] Balbi to get pretty close to me with lwo laps to 8o. I knew that everybody was tetting tired at the end and I thoutht if I iun pushed hard and rode a llawless last laP that I .ould break away from Balbi and maybe move up a position. I caught uP u/ith Sani and in the final turn I went to the inside and he went to the ouBide and squared it uP and I tot him at the line and finished l0*r a8ain." 15 Tim Ferry (8-6) 6th Place Tim Ferry has been on a hot streak as of late and in Colorado the Unbound Energy/l'4oto Xxx-backed rider creshed on the second lap ofthe opening moto, but charged back through the pack to post a hard- earned eighth-place flnish. ln the second moto, Ferry Bated lv€ll and ran a more consistent race. late in the moto he put on a surge that carried him to within striking distance ofa fadin8James Stewart, gving him a sixth Ior the moto and sixth overallforthe day. "My crash in the first moto was totelly my fault," Ferry said. "l was running in fifth or so, and iust washed the front end out. I saw Vuillemin fall there yesterday so I should have been more careful. I fell back to 20th and then worked my way back up to eighth. The recond moto was tood for me. I ran in fourth for a while, but droPped back a bit. I thouSht wind- ham and Bubba were going faster than they really were and I wished I would have followed them a lkale more in the beginnin8, but I think I am tetting close to these 8uys." 3 Michael Brown (36-9) l3th Place Michael Brown made the iump to the 450 class at Lakewood and turned in a respectable ninth- place finish in the final moto. despite not have any time on the bi88er bike. ln the llrst moto, Brown had fuel-related problems and linished 36th, giving him t 3th overall for the day. "ln the second moto, ltot an okay start and just worked my way up through the pack," Brown said. "l moved up as far as I could and then just rode steady. You've got to be a lot stronger to ride the 450, so it is just going to take a little time to adiust. The track was pretty choppy and I think I needed to 8et a little stronSer I havent raced many motos the last f€w week so hopefully it willSet better." 3l Jason Thomas ( I S-23) 2l st Place .lason Thomas had a day he would rather for8et in Colorado. The Subway Honda-backed rider tell after the srart of the opening moto and was in 3 lst place when he finished the first lap, but h€ charged throuSh the pack to finish lSth and .ollect three valuable points which helped him maintain his l4th overall position in the series standints. ln the second moto he, orlte a8ain, had troubles on the first lap when a roost knoaked his SogEles down. "ln the second moto I Bot dirt in my goggles and had to make a pit stop to get aaother pair," Thomas said. "Then I fell in the first moto and had to work my way back uP, so it was iust a frustrating day and I just need to forget abou! it and move on." AMAffoyota Motocross Championship presented by FME Round 7 of l2 Toyota National at Thunder Valley presented by Red Bull (10-10) 9th Place stronger with every race. "lt is iust good to finally be up front and runninE with those guys," Windham added. "l am stoked to be back, and hopefully, I can continue the momentum at Washougal , '' Team Yamaha's Chad Reed looked strong rn the second moto. pushing Millsaps for second during the first half of the race, before settling into a lonely third. However a "engine -related fuel problem" (according to Team Yamaha), dropped him to l6th in the first moto, giving him eiShth overall for the day. Travis Preston, Timmy Ferry and Michael Byrne rounded out the fifth through seventh overall positrons in Colorado. Byrne was the best starter of the bunch, putting his factory Kawasaki into the top four at the beginning of both motos. Howevet he was only good for a few laps before fading toward the rear due to a thumb injur/ suffered a couple of months ago. Byrne ended up going 6-8 for seventh overall. "My bike is so fast that it is hard to ride for the entire distance," Byr.ne said. "My thumb is only about 60 percent right now and I am only good for about l0 minutes and then things iust start deteriorating. I haven't been racing a lot and that has affected me, because the tracks have been so rough. This weekend wa5 much better for me, so I will iust try to take this momentum and keep doing the therapy, and hopefully after lt4illville, thinSs will start gettinS better.'' Ferry crashed his Unbound Energy/l''loto XXX Honda on the first lap of moto one, but charged back to post 8- 6 finishes for sixth overall, while Preston went 5-7 on his factory Honda for fifth. All in all, the Colorado race was a gor- geous event, as over 26,000 fans can attest to. The track and weather were great, and Carmi€hael thrilled the crowd by coming from behind in the first moto. "l knew that the start was going to be key today because of the altitude," Carmichael said. "lt's tough to pass because you don't have the horsepower to accelerate past somebody, so you have to get them going into a turn. "ln the first moto, the gate flinched just a little [but didn't drop] and it made me move. I grabbed the front brake and about that time the gate dropped and these guys were gone." Carmichael even enjoyed the race to the front. "lt was fun to catch up from behind. Sometimes those races are much fun than iust gettin8 the holeshot and powering away."
