JULY 26, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 56 BY DAWN DEPPI GRATTAN, MI, JUNE 17-18 R ound seven of the AHRMA Works Perfor- mance Historic Cup Series saw the return of the Old Harley-Indian Wars at Grattan Race- way Park, located in Michigan. Class C Handshift is the one of the oldest race classes still competing today. Grattan saw that never-ending battle continue, with Art Farley and Gary Maucher swapping leads lap after lap. Maucher's 1936 Indian Sport Scout was leading, but the last lap turned into a true drag race out of the last turn to the finish line, with Farley's 1940 Harley WLDR winning by less than half a wheel's length! Al Knapp, who is 84 years old, took third on his 1940 Harley. The next-biggest battle was in the Formula- 750 class, between Peter Politiek Jr., on a 1972 Ducati, and John Ellis, riding a 1972 Yamaha. Lap after lap, they battled for the lead. Ellis took first at the finish. The Triumph Thruxton Race was missing the usual celebrities, but it still held a few surprises. Will Harding, riding Gary Nixon's bike, starting from the last spot but finished in second place, behind Tim Joyce in first place. Fred Willink placed third. As it was the Father's Day weekend, it's only fitting to mention that Max Hinds placed fourth - beating his father, Jeff, who placed fifth. The 350cc GP contest was another great race. David Roper easily won. Craig Breckon finished second on his beautiful, restored 1969 Ducati after getting the worst start. The 500cc Premier event had Pat Mooney, on a 1962 Norton, taking first, followed by Joyce, on a well-built 1965 Norton, in second. Third place went to Bruce Yoxsimer from California. On Sunday, racing started early, with no practice runs, because storms were moving in. Luckily, the day's racing was dampened by only minor showers. The Formula 250 battle was between Todd Johnson and Craig Breckon. Johnson took the lead on lap five, but Breckon took the lead on lap six and finished first. In the race for the Thruxton Cup, Joyce held the lead for almost the entire race, only to be passed by Ted Cobb on the last hairpin to take the win. The 250cc GP is always an ongoing Ducati battle. On this day, Robbie Nigl placed first, beating Jonathan White, who took second. The Formula-750 contest's results were reversed from Saturday 's race, with Politiek finishing first and Ellis coming in second. The Sound Of Singles Two-Stroke contest was a fun race to watch. The three leaders were all riding Hondas. Colin Cameron won, followed by Robert Taylor and Cody Rodenborn. In the 750cc Sportsman class, Michael Dixon led at least half the race but had to settle for second, behind winner Ted Robinson. The last race of the day was the Formula Vintage event. After fighting for the lead throughout the race, Politiek took first place, over Robert Hurst. AHRMA Works Performance Historic Cup Series Rounds 7-8: Grattan Raceway Park Return of the Harley-Indian Wars Borne, Holland's Peter Politiek Jr. showed winning form en route to both the Formula-750 and Formula-Vintage races at round eight of the AHRMA Works Performance Historic Cup Series. BY GARY ROBERTS AUBURN, CA, JUNE 16 T wo visitors from Southern California were the big winners at Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway in Auburn, California. Nate Perkins won the Handicap main, and former National Cham- pion Charlie Venegas won the Scratch main. In the Scratch main, the lineup was exactly the same as it was the previous week. This time, Venegas took the inside gate position, and once the tapes were up, he was gone! Tommy Hedden, Bryan Yarrow and Mike Faria were left in his dust. Faria pulled off at turn two. Hedden and Yarrow held a close battle for second, with Hedden taking a slim lead, but with no chance of catching the very fast Venegas, so that remained the finishing order. For Venegas, this was his third big win this week; the previous Saturday night he had taken the prestigious Jack Milne Cup in Costa Mesa, and then on Wednesday he was the main- event winner at Industry Hills Speedway. Nate Perkins got to the Handicap main with a second-place finish in his heat and a win in his semifinal. At the 20-yard line, he was behind newly promoted Josh West, who was on the zero, and in front of T.J. Fowler, Hedden and Yarrow on the 40. Venegas chose to start on the 50. Perkins made a determined gate and quickly caught West. He got past him on the second lap and started building a safe lead. On lap three, Hedden got past West; on lap four, Fowler passed him; and on lap five, Yarrow did the same. Despite the long trip up from L.A., Perkins's frequent visits to Auburn have paid off for him and will no doubt become valuable at the two National Championship rounds to be held at Auburn later in the season. Perkins's win in the Handicap main makes him the sixth different rider to win a Handicap main in the six events held at Fast Fridays so far this season. Sacramento's Danny Turner started racing speedway a year ago, two months before his 49th birthday. This season he was promoted from Division Three to Division Two. On this night, he won the Division Two main event. This would be considered an impressive achievement for a newcomer, but it is downright outstanding for a rider his age.
