Adam Carpinello (58B) and Ben Evans (69F) battled in the 450cc Pro-Sport main at Maryland's Frederick Fairgrounds. This annual event is part of the AMA's Hot Shoe National Series and normally draws a quality field of riders. As could be expected, the Fourth of July was hot, with temperatures reaching triple digits. The Frederick Fairgrounds' half mile has a tricky shape, and over the years the track has gotten very rough. This year, the R.F. Kline Construction crew kept things running smoothly, and there were few problems. Until the main events started. All three races - the 450cc Expert, 450cc Pro Sport and the 750/1000cc Expert classes - were red-flagged at least once. AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship Rookie of the Year candidates Sam Halbert and Ricky Marshall both won their respective races in the 450cc Expert and the 750/1000cc Expert heats leading up to what appeared would be two big showdowns. In the 12-lap, 450cc Expert main, Scott's Powersports/ Schaeffer's Harley-Davidson's Raun Wood led into the first turn. By the end of the first lap, Halbert had recov- ered from a poor start and pushed his White's Harley-Davidson/ Bromley's Suzuki-backed Rotax into sec- ond. Eaken Racing/KK Motorcycle Supply's Marshall, Fatzinger Auto Salvage's Dan Gedeon and SJS Racing/Fredericktown Yamahas' Paul Lynch were close behind. Wood pulled out to a good lead, but Halbert was nipping away at his margin, while Marshall and the rest were falling back. As the leaders thundered out of turn two on lap six, Halbert got too high, lost control, and got into the outside fence. The youngster's Rotax took out about 40 feet of chain-link fence, and the race was red-flagged. Halbert's day was done; he was transported to the hospital for a check-up. Marshall tried to make the most of his new opportunity when the race restart- ed, but Wood held him off going into turn one. As the pack headed out of turn two, the red flags were came once more: Gary Conklin and Brian Phillips had tangled, and both went down hard. This time it was Phillips taking the ambulance ride (reportedly he suffered a leg injury); Conklin was able to make the last restart. The third time was the charm. Wood led the last seven laps, over Marshall and Gedeon. Kiesow Racing/Republic Harley- Davidson's Chris Hart worked his way around Lynch for fourth. The 12-lap 450cc Pro-Sport main was up next. Fhinehart racing/Dave's Cycle's Ben Evans quickly pulled a good lead on Mom & Dad/Pro Cycles/Duane Veeder- backed Adam Carpinello. Jim Cahlik stalled his Honda on the starting line; when he did get going, he was one lap down. By the halfway mark, Evans' lead was dwindling. On lap nine, suddenly Carpinello had the lead. Evans tried to run around the outside of Carpinello going into the first turn and took a long slide down. The red flag was displayed on lap 10. Evans made the restart from the back of the pack. Carpinello jumped out front, with Scott Clevenger, on his Hank Scott Racing/Geetes Construction-backed Rotax, in second. Evans and Cahlik (the latter still a lap down) were blasting toward the front. On lap 11, Cahlik rode up into the hay bales in turn one, but Cahlik rode it out. Nonetheless, the red flag once again came out. It was decided to call the race complete at lap 10. Carpinello was the winner, over Clevenger and the flying Evans, who had come from last to third in the one lap that was completed. With polesitter Halbert on the side- lines, Blue Springs Harley-Davidson/Las Vegas Harley-Davidson's Jess Roeder got the holeshot in the 750/1000cc Expert main. R&J/KK Motorcycle Supply's Nick Evans, Kiesow Racing's Chris Hart, and KK Motorcycle Supply/Baer Racing Products' Jaron Smith were right behind. Roeder pulled a small lead as Hart moved into second. Elf Fuels/Mike Meyers- backed Ricky Marshall was moving through the pack and had captured sec- ond by lap three. On lap six, Marshall had the lead, but Roeder's troubles had just begun. On the next lap, both Hart and Gedeon both got past Roeder, only to have the dreaded red flag come out again. Paul Lynch had pitched his SJS Racing/Fredericktown Yamaha-backed Harley away exiting turn four. The restart found Marshall still up front, but lucky dog Roeder had reclaimed second. The last six laps were easily led by Marshall, but Roeder could not hold off Hart for second. Gedeon was relegated to fourth, over Smith and Nort Racing/Dan Perry-backed Ken Yoder.
