JULY 26, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 50 BY CLAY LIGHT WASHOUGAL, WA, JUNE 17 S tanwood, Washington's Nick Schmidt rarely ventures out of the familiar confines of north- western Washington, but the Honda rider did make his mark in relatively new territory at round five of the CMC Pac West MX Nationals, held at Washougal Motocross Park. The 15-year- old was impressive in his demolishing of the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes, as well as the Open Amateur class, in which he topped large fields of riders from all over the West. Many competitors and spectators were scratching their heads early on, trying to figure out just who number 816 was, but by the end of the day his competitors were left frustrated, and all who watched him were impressed. Schmidt went six for six in motos contested and won, with Tommy Weeck and Chris Howell (in the 125s) and Weston Potter and Cory Brewer (in the 250s) his closest competition. Washington's Tony Boughten and Oregon's Adam Metzler were also dominant figures; their victories came in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes, respectively. Metzler grabbed the lead at the start of the opening 250cc Pro moto and remained there to the finish, despite some stiff competition from Boughten and Arenacross star Brad Hagseth, who placed second and third. Moto two had Boughten assume command, followed by Metzler, Hagseth and the rest of the field. Metzler quickly overtook Boughten t o t a k e t h e l e a d o n t h a t s a m e l a p , b u t B o u g h t e n , H a g s e t h a n d I d a h o ' s Ky l e Kubitschek kept pressure on him for several laps. Hagseth got past Boughten and then M e t z l e r o n l a p f i v e , l e a v i n g M e t z l e r a n d Boughten to battle for second; Metzler held off a last-ditch attempt on Boughten's part to nab second, a position that would earn Metzler the overall win, despite Hagseth's moto victory. Overall, Metzler (1-2), Hagseth (3-1), Boughten (2-3), Kubitschek (4-4) and Sam De Atley (5-5) filled out the top five. Wyoming's Chad Jorgensen (6-7), Oregon's Pete Sannan (8-6) and Montana's Drew Woolsey (9-9) rounded out the top paying positions. De Atley was fastest off the start in the first 125cc Pro moto, trailed by Boughten, Hagseth, Daniel Reude and Metzler. Boughton got past De Atley the following lap and never looked back; the Skagit Powersports-backed Boughten had the lead all to himself and easily won, while Hagseth placed second, followed by De Atley, Kubitschek and Metzler, who got by KTM- mounted Sannan on the final lap to finish fifth. De Atley took the lead at the start of moto two, trailed by Sannan, Metzler and the rest of the pack. Boughten got around Sannan for second and then set out after De Atley, and on the next circuit he succeeded in taking the lead. Once out front, Boughten held a convincing lead until Metzler clawed his way into contention, and the two dueled to the finish. Boughten edged Metzler to sweep both motos and earn the overall victory, ahead of De Atley's consistent 3-3 placings. Metzler (5-2) earned third overall, followed by Kubitchek (4-5), Sannan (6-4) and the rest of the 15-rider field. PHOTO BY CLAY LIGHT BY LARRY WOOSTER BATAVIA, NY, JUNE 18 S ome 522 riders came to Area51 Motocross for the initial rounds of both the Race Tools WNYMA Summer Series and the Scott USA/Acerbis Northeast Gold Cup Champi- onship Series, presented by KSA Racing, all seeking their portions of close to $40,000 in product rewards at the conclusion of the NEGCCS. Scott USA, Acerbis, KSA Racing, Race Tools, Dunlop Tires, Sick Racing MX Apparel, K- 100 Fuel Treatment, Tucker Rocky 's MSR & Answer Racing, Fox Racing, Thunder Alley Sports, Applied Racing, Fly Racing, FMF, Power- Madd, Racing Pro-Wheel Components, WNY Pro-Action Suspension, DP Brakes, No Fear, 909 grips, Twin Air, No-Toil were among those who put up those rewards. With that much loot on the line, it'll be interesting to see who cow- boys up and goes after the $500 in motocross products for first overall, $350 for second over- all, $200 for third overall, $150 for fourth overall and $100 for fifth overall in every class in this must-race-four-out-of-five race series. Twenty-one young guns in the 50cc (7-8) class launched off on the Dunlop Tires minicross track. Cobra-mounted Antonio Ortiz grabbed the holeshot, with Jesse Kirchmeyer on his outside, while a yard sale broke out in their wake, as Dominick Allen toppled, blocking Dillon Amo, Corey Trietley and Shae Ball. Austin Lewis, Dalton Phillips and Cameron Buckley went wide and avoided the pink flamingos. Ortiz led most of the moto, but hard work and smart line choices moved Zack Harding from midpack to lead dog before the laps ran out. Harding edged Ortiz in a two-bike breakaway over Phillips, Buckley and Dakota Wheaton. Chris Richardson and Sebastian Knapp led the yard- sale-delayed Trietley, Ball and Amo. In moto two, Ortiz jumped out front quickly, but he went down one jump after the holeshot. Buckley, Lewis and Wheaton scrambled to take up the slack, and one heck of a battle broke out. Harding caught the three amigos on lap one and powered his way right by for the lead. Buckley was in second and busy holding off Wheaton's challenges when Phillips joined the battle. Phillips passed Wheaton and pulled up tight on Buckley, but it was Harding who stole the show. Spring Series champion Harding (1-1) added another first overall to his already large collection. Buckley (4-2) busted butt for second overall. Phillips (3-3), Wheaton (5-4) and Ortiz (2-9) filled out the top five overall. A tip of the goggles goes out to Julia Krezmien (3-1) for capturing first overall in the 50cc (4-6) Stock class. Other stops on the WNYMA Northeast Gold Cup Championship Series tour include July 2 at Silver Springs Racing, July 23 at Frozen Ocean Moto-X, and the final race on July 30 at Freedom Motocross Park. There will be a giant NEGCCS awards celebration at Area51 Motocross on September 10, at which the WNYMA will award the $40,000 treasure trove of products. Check out www.NEGCCS.com for details.
