C Y C L E N E W S • JULY 19, 2006 87 Online poll results from last week Suomy USA and Road Racer X magazine held a contest recently in which MotoGP fans were asked to design a helmet for Marlboro Ducati's Loris Capirossi. In addition to winning the all-expense paid trip to the Red Bull U.S. GP at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the winner would get to see to see his design in action as Capirossi would wear the helmet in the big race - and then the winner would get to take the autographed helmet home afterward. Well that winner is Chris Glaspell of Aliso Viejo, California. Glaspell's helmet design was chosen by Capirossi and will be applied to a Suomy Spec 1R Extreme helmet by AirTrix. "The 'Koi' or 'Karp' is called the king of river fish and has been long regarded as a joyful fish," Glaspell explained of his unique design. "Although Chinese in origin, the carp is now widely celebrated in Japan, particularly for its manly qualities. It is said to climb waterfalls bravely, and, if caught, it lies upon the cutting board awaiting the knife without a quiver, not unlike a samurai [warrior] facing a sword. It symbolizes much the same: courage, the ability to attain high goals, and over- coming life's difficulties. I think Loris fits that description! "The 'Wave' along with the Koi symbolizes the wave that's about to hit Monterey when Loris arrives!" Glaspell adds. "The pattern in the front is traditional fabric pattern that is meant to be 'Shibui' or elegant/tasteful/stylish meaning to the design. Loris should have been Japanese."
