Hindsight Summernite Minibike Series Round 1: Hindsight MX Kandarian Close, but Childress Clinches It BY JUSTIN WHARTON NORTH PLAINS, OR, JUNE 3 T here's a new indoor series this summer in the Pacific Northwest that's geared specifically for minibikes only. It's the Hindsight Summernite Minibike Series, Presented by JJW Designs. Offering classes for kids on machines from 50s to 105s, and pitbike classes for adults on machines from 50cc up to 150cc four-strokes, the first event ended up being a fun and laid-back approach to racing. One of the big winners of the night was Zak Kazlavskas, who won the main event in the 50cc Beginner class, edging out Ian Low and Alex Torres. Kazlavskas then went on to win the hotly contested 50cc Open class. Finishing in the runner-up position was Austin Black, and taking third was Joseph Stenger. Trent Preheim finish fourth. After having some bike problems, Ryan Martin took fifth place. The best racing almost always comes in the 50cc Stock (Pitbike) class. When the riders lined up for the main event, most were betting on former Pro competitor Chris Clark to take the win, after he'd decimated everyone in his qualifier. Clark didn't disappoint; he aggressively jumped out into an early lead. This time he had Chris Johnson hounding his every move, just waiting for a chance to get by. Further back, buddies Ty Baker and Jake Childress were having a battle royale; they were banging bars, pushing each other in the berms, and flat out going for broke. Johnson pulled out all the stops on the last lap and was clanking his poor XR50 on all the jumps, trying to gain enough time to pass Clark for the lead. Clark and Johnson came into the last corner hot, but Clark cut way inside of the corner and held on to take the win. Johnson had to settle for a second- place finish, while Baker, Childress and Daniel Ramirez finished third through fifth, respectively. The 110cc Mod class was undoubtedly the largest class of the day; a couple of guys had to start in a second row on the starting line. When everyone took off, it was Neal Kandarian taking the holeshot on his BBR 110. After starting in the back row, Justin Wharton cut in the inside in the first corner to pass four guys, and then passed three more in the second corner to take the lead away from Kandarian. Wharton led for only a couple of laps before he had to pull off with a mechanical failure, which gave the lead to Childress. Just like they did in the 50cc Stock class, Childress and Baker were racing hard to beat each other, but Childress held on to the lead to take the checkered flag. Second went to Baker, while Kandarian ended up third. Fourth went to Tyler Baker, and Jake Bartlett took fifth.
