JULY 19, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 54 BY CLAY LIGHT RICHLAND, WA, JUNE 10 Y a m a h a - m o u n t e d J o s h H i l l o n c e a g a i n steamrolled the competition in a multitude of classes at round three of the 21st annual CMC Pac West MX Nationals, held at Rich- land's Horn Rapids OHV Park in eastern Wash- ington. Hill - who, along with his family, made the trek from Yoncalla, Oregon - demolished the competition in the 125cc Pro, 250cc Pro, Open Pro and Four-Stroke classes and was the day's lone four-class winner. It's no secret that the 17-year-old Hill will be ending his illustrious Amateur career within the next two months and step right into the Yamaha big rig, so this would be one of the last times most on hand would get to see Hill before he steps up to full-time AMA National and Supercross. The way Hill rode on this day, it looked like he's ready: Hill finished well ahead of Oregon's Adam Metzler in the 125cc Pro class and Brad Hagseth in the 250cc Pro class, and he swept all four motos in the fastest classes of the day. Honda rider Kevin Urquhart, regarded as one of the Northwest's top Intermediate riders, made his series debut a successful one by topping the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes and placing second to another top-tier Intermediate rider, Weston Potter, in the Before The Hill Intermediate class. Potter won both Before The Hill motos, while Oregon's Arlie Southard and Urquhart traded second- place finishes to Potter in the class. Urquhart also dazzled the spectators with a 1-1 rout of the 29-rider 125cc Intermediate class. Potter was on Urquhart's pace in both motos; while Potter placed second to Urquhart in the opening moto, he encountered problems in moto two and placed 22nd and finished outside of the top 10 overall. Idaho's Jerad Butler (3-2) and Spokane's Chris Howell (4-4) were the next-most-consistent riders and completed the top three overall. In the 250cc Intermediate class, Urquhart didn't win either moto, but he did get the overall win by sheer consistency, with a 2-2 tally. Potter and Ben Evans won the two motos, but neither could duplicate their successful rides. Potter (1-4) finished second overall, ahead of Butler (5-3). Had Hill gone south a week earlier, Metzler would have been the overall 125cc Pro-class winner. Metzler stuck closest to Hill in both motos on the rough, sandy course to take second-place money back with him and emerge as an odds-on favorite to take the points lead once Hill leaves for California. Kawasaki rider Keith Batterson and Hagseth battled for third throughout both motos, although it was Batterson who was the only rider all day to lead Hill (on the first lap of moto one), and he earned third overall on a 4-3 score, ahead of Pete Sannan (6-4) and Kyle Kubitschek (5-5). Hagseth's 10th-place finish in moto two prevented a possible podium finish for the Suzuki rider, who would later score the overall Vet Over 25 and Over 30 Pro-class wins. Top amateur performers included Justin Hill, in the 65cc (9-11) and 65cc Open classes; Jeremiah Sparks, in the 250cc and Before The Hill Junior classes; Tanner Morris, the winner of the Pee Wee (7-8) and 50cc Open classes; and Idaho's Matt De Atley, who topped the 85cc (14-16) and Supermini classes. PHOTO BY CLAY LIGHT BY DAN SCHMITT TOOELE, UT, JUNE 10 W e have now entered the Age of Road Racing. Larry Miller, one of the largest auto dealers in the western states, has built perhaps the greatest road-race course in the USA. Spending more than $80 million, Miller has set a new standard. This first profes- sional race at the Miller Motorsports Park attracted thousands of racing fans for the road racing, freestyle motocross and go-karting. The action started with Tray Batey and Lee Acree, on the Vesrah/Nielsen Suzukis, jumping to the lead in the Open Superstock final. Robert Jensen and Jason Perez (with Ben Thompson) overtook these two teammates and charged into an epic battle for the point. David Weber soon joined the action, but when the checkered flag flew, Jensen had the 8.4-second margin of victory. Batey came back to beat Taylor Knapp in the Heavyweight Twins Superstock final, while Monte Pascuzzo captured the Novice win. Jeff Walker led the Formula Two Expert final until Zoran Vujasinovic made a last-lap move to capture the victory. Walker came back to win the Lightweight Twins Expert final. In the hotly contested 600cc Expert Superstock final, Danny Eslick charged into the lead, with Perez and Acree in hot pursuit. Perez snatched the lead coming to the line on the second lap, as Michael Beck and Shane Turpin hooked up with Acree. By the halfway point, Perez and Eslick made it a two-way battle as they put a three-second gap on the three-way contest behind them. Riding the wheels off his Suzuki, Eslick came up .0486 seconds short of Perez at the final flag. Jensen, on the Michelin/Suzuki, came back in the 750cc Expert Superstock final to outrun Mark Junge and Acree, on the Vesrah Suzukis. Knapp held off the late-race charge of Dale Kieffer to maintain fourth. In 600cc Expert Superbike action, Perez ran solid on his Yamaha R6, with Beck second. Alan Schmidt beat Blake Young to the line by .224 seconds in the 750cc Expert Superbike final. Local hero Turpin, took the victory in the Open Expert Superbike final. Mark Bartley started the day with a runaway victory in the Open Novice Superstock race. Mario Bonfante beat Kory Cowan in the 600cc Novice Superstock final, and then took the 750cc final win, over Jay Millhiser. He jumped the start in the 600cc Superbike final, and Ryan Regaldo took the win on his Honda. Millhiser won both the 750cc Superbike and the Formula One Novice finals with some great riding on his 750cc Suzuki. Perez jumped the start in Formula One and had to come in for a stop-and-go penalty. Jensen moved into the lead as a battle developed behind him, among Acree, Batey, Knapp and Thompson. At the halfway point, Jenson built a three-second margin, while Knapp picked up the pace. Charging in the kink, he showed a wheel to Acree. This twosome went wheel to wheel for the next two laps, but during the last lap Knapp crashed out, and Batey came home third.
