JULY 19, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 56 BY DAN SCHMITT TOOELE, UT, JUNE 11 M aking a small change from the norm, WERA decided to run this six-hour Nation- al Endurance event on Sunday. Thirty-nine teams came to Utah to meet the challenge on the 3-mile outer course at this shrine to road racing. At 10 a.m., the green flag flew, and two waves of bikes charged down the 3500-foot straightaway. Arnchu Racing led Vesrah Racing, 5150 Racing, Red Star and Team Velocity Racing. Starting from the back of the second wave, Jason Perez, on the Rave Yamaha Racing R1, charged through the field and, by the last corner, drove into the lead on the first lap. During the second lap, Perez put a 10-second g a p b e t w e e n h i m s e l f a n d s e c o n d - p l a c e d Arnchu. By the fifth lap, the Honda R&D rider, on the 1000cc Honda, made his way into second overall, with Matsushima Performance, on the 600cc Suzuki, in third. Fifty minutes into the race, Rave Yamaha ducked into the pits for fuel, turning the lead over to Vesrah Racing. The red flag flew at the one-hour-and-20-minute mark with a rider laying in turn six, oil on the track, and the bike against the barrier some 300 feet down the track. After a brief 15-minute break to clean up the oil and retrieve a few more bikes from around the track, the green flew again, and Rave Yamaha charged into the lead again, with Jay Tanner in control. Neighbor Of The Beast continued to lead the Lightweight Superbike class, as team owner Melissa Berkoff took over. Matsushima Performance and Red Star battled for the lead in the Middleweight Superbike class, swapping leather in every turn. LOC Endurance dominated the Middleweight Superstock class, leading Dalke Motorsports and Team Chicago. At the halfway point, Rave Yamaha led Vesrah and Red Star. One lap down came Arnchu, 5150 Racing and Matsushima Performance. Macheca Motorsports, Honda R&D, LOC Performance and Wizard Racing II rounded out the top 10. The red flag flew again at the four-hour- and-12-minute point, as Arnchu's rider and Suzuki were laying in the middle of turn two. The green flew again after a 25-minute delay, and Rave Yamaha again charged into the lead, f o l l o w e d b y Ve s r a h , Re d S t a r, 5150, Matsushima and Honda R&D. With fast action in the pits, Vesrah Suzuki gained the lead at the five-hour mark, with Rave Yamaha in second and a recovering Arnchu in third. Red Star led the Middleweight Superbike class, one lap up on Matsushima, as LOC held the lead in Middleweight Superstock class, over Team Chicago and Honda HMR. It was going down to the wire as Rave Yamaha ducked into the pits for fuel. There were 20 minutes left in the race. On the gas and flying through traffic, Rave Yamaha stayed ahead of Vesrah Suzuki and captured the victory with a margin of 4.791 seconds. "We have a great rider, Jason Perez," said Rave rider Jay Tanner. "He gave us the lead early on, and then, after the second restart, he made up time and caught Vesrah, and that is what it is all about." BY DAVE BEAUMONT LUCERNE VALLEY, CA, JUNE 10 A fter a four-month recovery from injury, Paul Krause returned to his winning ways at the 19th annual Meltdown European Scram- bles in Lucerne Valley, topping both the Vet Expert and Senior Expert races despite feeling the effects of the long layoff. "My speed felt good, but I'm not in shape," said Krause. "I need to shed some pounds and get back to racing every weekend." The Senior Experts were the first to see Krause's rear fender, as his Malcolm Smith Motorsports/Bridgestone/FMF/Maxima KTM 525 was the first bike to drop into the rocky sand wash after the bomb run. The memory of eight broken ribs and a collapsed lung made him glad to be out front. "I didn't want to take any chances in the dust, so it was great to get the holeshot and ride my own race," said Krause. A quick refueling and a change of numbers were all his KTM needed between races, and Krause lined up with the Vet Experts, hoping for another great start. "This time I missed the kickstarter," he said, "so I was sixth or seventh at the bomb. After that, I slid out in the dust and dropped to about 10th." He worked his way up through the pack and finally took the lead when Ryan Spangler stalled his MSR/Big Gun/Twin Air/Dunlop/BRP Honda 450. " I a l m o s t e n d o e d i n t h e r o c k s , " s a i d Spangler. "I had to shut it down, and it took three or four kicks to get going." Ryan Kudla wowed the spectators in the next race, as he center-punched a greasewood bush and took out some bunting near the finish line while taking the overall win on his IMS/Renthal/No Toil Yamaha YZ250. Justin Morrow took advantage of the technical sections of the 9-mile course to claim second overall and first 125cc Expert on his JBC/Six Six One/Suspension By Jake/GPR Yamaha 125. Third overall went to Amateur Ty Hathaway, on his KTM 525. In his first year of desert racing, Hathaway has won his class consistently, frequently beating the Open Experts as well. Unlike other first-year racers, Hathaway doesn't come from a motocross background. Since the age of 2, he has been involved in bicycle trials, traveling around the country competing in trials events. When he got the urge to race motorcycles, the challenge of the desert terrain beckoned, and now he has a shelf full of trophies and (after this race) a red Expert stripe for his number plate. In the Women's Expert class, Amy Hasten cruised to the win on her new Lipert/ESR/FTD Yamaha YZ250. After some bad luck on her old bike earlier in the year, she knew it was time for a change. "I had to buy some new luck," said Hasten. "I was becoming a regular at Chaparral, ordering parts for my old bike. Finally I got a new bike at Montclair Yamaha, and I love it!"
