C Y C L E N E W S • JULY 19, 2006 43 The new KTM 250 XC-F is closely based on the newest, 2007 version of the DOHC four-valve 250 SX motocross model (which will be out soon), but engineered for the off-road racer. The off- road 250 F comes in two forms - XC-F and XC-F-W. The "W" models have slightly wider first, second and third gears and a slightly taller sixth gear, and more supple suspension settings than the "standard" XC models. The Ws also have an odometer/race computer, whereas the standard XCs do not. Other off-road amenities found on the 250 XC-F and W include an 18-inch rear wheel, a slightly larger 2.64-gallon fuel tank, a smoother ignition curve, a higher-output ignition (70 watts of lighting power), and an off-road-tuned exhaust system. All of the W models have spark arrestors except for the 250 XC-F-W and all of the XCs. All of KTM four-strokes, including the MXers, in 2007 will feature electric starting except the 250 SX-F. All of the new KTM cross-country bikes, such as the 450 XC pictured here, have new open- cartridge forks with smaller 12mm-aluminum-cartridge rods, which KTM claims work better than traditional enclosed-cartridge forks and weigh less. All of the XCs and XC-Ws have the same machined triple-clamps as last year, but the steering stem has been tapered to permit more welcomed flex. 250 XC-F/XC-F-W motor.
