Nate Adams won the first round of the Dew Tour in Louisville, Kentucky, on June 26, the freestyler beating out Travis Pas- trana after performing a Cordova Backflip, which involves the rider hooking his feet and arms on the handlebars of his bike and arching backward, all the while pulling off a backflip. The trick was a first in Dew Tour history, according to Adam's publicist. "I'm so excited with this win," Adams said. "Since breaking my femur I haven't felt comfortable on the bike and I'm just now starting to get back into the form I was prior to my injury. I can't wait for the rest of the season. Live Nation and KTM have signed a three-year contract to continue the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge that is held during intermission at the AMA Supercross events. Celebrating its 10-year anniversary in 2006, the KJSC has seen over 2500 chil- dren demonstrate their skills in front of thousands of Supercross fans. "Over the past decade, the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge has become an integral part of each Supercross event," said Todd Jendro, senior director of operations for Live Nation. The program provides an exciting and entertaining element for our Super- cross audience, but more importantly, the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge serves as a shining example of the positive role that motorcycling plays as a family activity. To see the joy on the faces of both the com- petitors and the fans is rewarding, and our company is proud to be able to work with KTM to continue to promote this positive example of our sport." "While we certainly regret having to make a late change like this, we're excited about the opportunity to race at Waterford Hills," said Grover. "The Waterford Hills facility boasts a beau- tiful road course situated in a scenic set- ting. AMA Flat Track announcer and artist J.B. Norris is offering one of his flat-track art pieces on eBay to help Terry Poovey and his family. "I hope the dirt-track family will open their hearts and wallets for Terry," said Norris. Poovey, a longtime star of the AMA Grand National Dirt Track Series, was injured in a multibike crash on the last lap of the recent Springfield Mile. Poovey remains in a coma in a hospital in Texas after being recently transferred by air ambulance from Springfield, Illinois, to Dal- las. The air-ambulance bill was $10,000. Norris is offering this special "Pullin' For Poovey" flat-track art piece on eBay in an effort to help the Pooveys cover this, and/or other expenses they have incurred, as a result of his injury. Proceeds from this sale will be sent to the family. This oil-on- canvas artwork depicts Poovey racing through a corner aboard his Harley-David- son XR750 at the Springfield Mile the day he was injured. "Pulling for Poovey" meas- ures in at 30 by 24 inches and is framed with a process known as gallery wrapped, with the canvas wrapped around a wooden frame - ready to hang. If so, the AMA would like to know about it. Earlier this year, hundreds of workers at the American Coal Company mine in Galatia, Illinois, were denied health-care coverage for motorcycle-relat- ed injuries, according to the AMA. At American Coal, if a worker is injured riding a legally licensed motorcycle on the street, there's no medical coverage. Even if anoth- er driver causes the injury, the rider could lose. He'd be entirely dependent on the other driver's insurance coverage. And these days, medical bills can quickly over- whelm minimum-coverage policies - if the other driver even has insurance, the AMA says. The AMA is backing measures in Congress to bar employers from discrimi- nating against motorcyclists and ATV riders in the health-care arena. If you find that you are not covered on your motorcycle or ATV by your medical plan, let the AMA know by emailing the information to legal affairs editor Bill Kresnak at bkresnak@ama-cycle.org or mail the info to him at AMA, 13515 Yarmouth Drive, Pickerington, Ohio 43147. Nominees have been named and voting is open for ESPN's 2006 ESPY Awards. Ricky Carmichael and Freestyler Jeremy "Twitch" Stenberg have both been nomi- nated for Best Male Action Sport Athlete. Mike Metzger received a nomination in the Best Record-Breaking Performance cate- gory for his backflip over the fountains of Caesar's Palace. Voting is open to the pub- lic until July 8 at www.espys.tv. The 14th annual ESPY awards will be announced July 12 and televised on ESPN on July 16. JULY 12, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 6
