C Y C L E N E W S • JULY 12, 2006 59 BY BOBBY DAVANPORT CASEY, IL, JUNE 10 E ric Katzmeyer had a big day at round nine of the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association's Northwest Maico & CZ National Post-Vintage Motocross Series at Lincoln Trail Motosports. Katzmeyer piloted his 1983 Honda CR480 to class wins in two tough classes. Katzmeyer's day began with a holeshot in the Over 40 Intermediate class. His lead didn't last long, though, as Dave Osborne rocketed past him over a step-up jump on the opening lap. John Munich began to recover from a midpack start, working his way into third, ahead of Patrick Dickman, Jim Alexander, Robin Caballero Gary Ellis and Jeff Spivey. Osborne began to fade on the third lap, allowing both Katzmeyer and Munich to pass. Katzmeyer held a four-second lead going into the fourth lap, when Munich suddenly picked u p h i s p a c e . H e c a u g h t t h e l e a d e r, b u t Katzmeyer never faltered, and he crossed the finish line with less than a bikelength lead over Munich. Osborne held on to finish third, over a closing Ellis and Dickman. Osborne nailed one of his infamous "super" holeshots, over Katzmeyer and Munich, to start moto two. Munich passed Katzmeyer and set out after Osborne on the first lap. The top three riders remained in close formation, without change in position, until Katzmeyer worked his way into second on lap three. Osborne's moto came to an abrupt end on lap four when his Honda came to a halt with engine problems. Katzmeyer happily took over the lead, which he managed to hold for the duration of the moto. Munich held on to the second spot, ahead of Ellis, Alexander and Lawrence Landrith. Katzmeyer also had a successful day in the Ultima 500cc Intermediate class. He emerged from battles with Rik Smits and Michael Edwards to earn both moto wins. Tim Shepard blasted out of the first turn with a commanding lead in the first Over 40 Expert moto. His lead only lasted half a lap, as he blew his Yamaha's shock apart over a big g-out jump. Oscar Gaetan gladly assumed the lead, ahead of David Blauman, Bob Speiss and Scott Stanford. Speiss managed to work his way into second on the third lap, but Gaetan had already established a large lead, which he would maintain to the checkered flag. Gaetan led the pack as moto two roared off the line. Shepard overtook Gaetan during the first lap on his reshocked YZ465. Once in the lead, Shepard was never challenged as he cruised to a relatively easy moto win. Gaetan held the second position, which ensured his class title with 1-2 moto finishes. Speiss finished second overall via 2-3 scores. John Lewis reduced his number of races for 2006, but it doesn't appear that his results have suffered. He got holeshots in both motos in the highly competitive Historic 500cc Intermediate class. Gary Davis was able to pass the tiring Lewis for the first-moto win, but Lewis managed a wire-to-wire victory in moto two. CN NOV: 1. Megan Williams (CZ). OPEN AGE NOV: 1. Bobby Davanport (Suz); 2. WMN BY BOBBY DAVANPORT CASEY, IL, JUNE 11 M ick Andrews, Jeff Smith and Jim Pomeroy showed that they can still navigate a rain- saturated circuit at round eight of the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association's Speed & Sport/Northwest Maico & CZ-sponsored National Vintage Motocross Series, held at Lin- coln Trail Motosports. Each of these veterans displayed the speed and skills that propelled them to the pentacle of the elite list amongst the greatest motorcycle racers of all time. Andrews obviously has "game" when it comes to negotiating a challenging circuit. He kept his Ossa churning up the muddy track en route to a multiple-moto sweep in the Classic 250cc Expert class. Dan Johns racked up second-place honors on his AJS, ahead of Terry Gates and Andy Blackburn. Andrews concluded his undefeated day with a win in the Over 60 Expert class. Henry Gref was hot on Andrews' heels during the early stages, but he wasn't able to equal Andrews' pace in either moto. Pomeroy has endured his share of muddy tracks while traveling the national and international motocross circuits. "Bimbo" quickly adapted to the muddy conditions as he topped both motos in the Over 50 Expert class. Smith had one of his typical days. The former World Champion won the Over 70 Expert class. Race action among the less famous was just as exciting. Eric Muffley blasted his Kawasaki into the lead, ahead of Jimmy Jerles, Tim Shepard and the rest of the Sportsman 500cc Experts. Po s i t i o n s c h a n g e d o n t h e s e c o n d l a p , a s Shepard overtook Jerles for second. Shepard eventually pressured Muffley but could never manage a pass, and the moto ended with Muffley earning the win. Muffley pulled a decisive holeshot to begin moto two. Shepard quickly passed Jay Gref and began to pressure Muffley. Shepard spotted an opening and seized the top spot on lap two. Muffley wasn't content following in Shepard's roost, so he pegged his big KX to retake the lead a lap later. The two riders set a blistering p a c e f o r t h e r e s t o f t h e m o t o , b u t t h e i r positions remained unchanged. The Sportsman 250cc Expert class was one of the most competitive of the day. Dave Smeal, Muffley and Mark Maynard battled for the top position early in moto one. Smeal held the top spot until he experienced problems that dropped him back to sixth. Muffley emerged with the win, ahead of the battling pack. A repeat performance from Muffley appeared to be in jeopardy, as his Kawasaki required a push before coming to life as the two-minute board was displayed.
