JULY 12, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 58 BY DAVEY COOMBS MOUNT MORRIS, PA, JUNE 4 O ne week after the second round of the 2006 Toyota AMA Motocross Nationals, the 801 top amateurs racers from the region gathered at High Point Raceway for the AMA Northeast Regional Finals. From there, the seven best in 16 different classes qualified directly into the AMA Air Nautiques Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn's Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, which begin on July 31 and run for an entire week. Austin Stroupe, 16, won the overalls in all four classes that he entered - three B divisions and the Four-Stroke class - showing his versatility throughout a sometimes rainy weekend that made the track as dynamic as it was rough. With each division employing a three-moto format, Stroupe was able to win eight out of his 12 motos on the weekend. He was beaten by fellow Kawasaki rider P.J. Larsen in the other four. He has to choose which classes to ride in Tennessee, as riders are limited to two classes there, but Stroupe already knows where he will line up. "I will definitely be riding the 125cc classes down there, because those seem to be the hyped classes - Stock and Mod," he stated; when asked who he expects his primary c o m p e t i t i o n t o b e , S t r o u p e a n s w e r e d , "Definitely Ryan Dungey and Trey Canard, and maybe Kyle Cunningham; P.J.'s also been there all weekend, and I think he's going to be a really good contender down at Loretta Lynn's, so props to him." Larsen, 15, made the tip to Pennsylvania from his home in Charleston, South Carolina, where he rides with former factory rider Larry Ward fairly often. Larsen was asked if he felt like the underdog going up against Stroupe here. "Sure, in a way I do," he replied, "and that puts a lot of pressure on me, because he's won so many National Championships, and I know I can run with him. I just have to put it all together: good starts, good laps, and just stay in front of him." T h a t p l a n w o r k e d f o r t w o m o t o s o n Sunday, and hopefully it will work in Tennessee. Larsen has already chosen his classes, as well. "I'm going to do 125 B Stock and Mod," Larsen added. "I'm not going to mess with the 450cc [class] at Loretta's. I don't think I can handle it for 30 minutes." Darryn Durham and Tickle had some huge battles in the 250cc-Open A Pro-Sport classes. Pennsylvania's Durham emerged as the winner in the Open A class after holding off Tickle throughout the final moto. Tickle also took two out of three motos to win the 125cc A group, and then swept the 250cc-Open A class. Durham had problems in the 125cc A Pro- Sport class when his radiator hose fell off, leaving Tickle to win his third class of the weekend with a steady 2-2-2 showing. Having some difficulty in the 250cc/Open A Pro-Sport class was New York's Phil Nicoletti, who placed 27th in the first moto but bounced back with 1-4 finishes in the last two motos to claim seventh overall and qualify for Loretta Lynn's. PHOTO BY TONY SCAVO BY JILL ASHWORTH PATTERSON GEORGETOWN, CA, JUNE 4 A t 47 years young, KTM-mounted Dave Wood got on the throttle hardest near the end of the day to claim the victory at the 33rd annual Fool's Gold Enduro and become the oldest District 36 rider to ever overall an enduro series event. Hosted by the California Enduro Riders Association, the fourth round of the District 36/Moose Northern California Championship Enduro Series (and the District 36/Motul Northern California B/C Championship Enduro Series) was held at the Rock Creek OHV area i n t h e E l D o r a d o N a t i o n a l F o r e s t n e a r Georgetown, California. The 89-ground-mile, three-segment course was laid out by CERA's trail boss, Rick Guidice, and it featured a great combination of single- track trails, wooded sections, rocky hills, fire roads, and a challenging trek across Rock Creek - as well as some very strategic check locations. C o m i n g i n t o t h e f i r s t g a s b r e a k , Powerhouse Yamaha/Independent Race Shop- backed Kevin Wiley and JP Metal Fab's Brian Jelich led the pack, being the only two entrants with clean scorecards and the only two A-class riders to zero the well-calculated third check. Several riders were soaking wet when they got to the gas area at Five Corners, as they had taken a full dunk (along with their bikes) in Rock Creek when they tried to cross it. Many didn't mind, and some even commented that it was a relief from the dust and a way to help stay cool in the warm weather. On the longer second section, test scores began to separate the contenders. Fox/Dick's Racing/Mach 1 Motorsports-sponsored Wood logged the best time of 2.102 at check seven, f o l l o w e d c l o s e l y b y W i l e y 's 2.109 and M o o s e / H o n d a Pe n i n s u l a / E n g i n e s O n l y- supported James Ptarcinski's 2.119. Wiley was still the race leader through the eighth check, with a total of 3.109 points to Wood's 4.102 and Ptarcinski's 4.119. Jelich dropped to fourth with a 5.189, and TMC's Kevin Ruffoni moved up to fifth with 6.192, followed closely by Faultline Suspension- backed James Boardman's 6.195. At the end of the second test at check nine, more position changes occurred - with Wood gassing it hard and emerging with the best score of 3.200, compared to Wiley 's 4.233, which gave Wood the lead. On the third section heading back to camp, Wo o d t u r n e d i t u p a n o t h e r n o t c h a n d extended his lead by carding a 2.148, followed closest by Wiley's 4.217. "I felt really good in those last two tests," Wood said. "All the event-only trails were a blast - it was great to ride some 'real' trails out there." At the finish, Wood claimed the victory with a final score of 9.450, and Wiley took second with 11.559. Ptarcinski's 14.654 edged out Jelich's 14.774 for third, and Boardman's 15.757 was good for fifth. Christopher Young, Ruffoni, Jack Roberts, Kerry Simpson and John Sagaria rounded out the top 10. Eric Nye took top B-class honors, and Paul Bigham was the winner of the C class. CN FOOL'S GOLD ENDURO GEORGETOWN, CALIFORNIA PRELIMINARY RESULTS: JUNE 4, 2006 (ROUND 4) O/A: 1. Dave Wood (KTM); 2.
