JULY 5, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 52 BY GARY CRIDER CHATSWORTH, GA, MAY 27-28 T his weekend was the final opportunity for riders to qualify for the upcoming AMA Loretta Lynn's Regional Championships at Lazy River MX Ranch. Not only was this the final Southeastern area qualifier, it was also the last qualifier anywhere in the country, which may help explain the fact that 933 riders from 17 states and Puerto Rico were on hand for the event. Organizers sprinkled the lineup with additional classes as needed so that there would be a class for everybody on both days. Saturday was mainly for the LLQ Stock classes. Sunday's event was a tripleheader, in which the LLQ Modified classes were combined with round 10 of the AMA Southern All-Stars MX Tour and round six of the SAS Southern Spin-Off Series. The top eight finishers in each LLQ class were guaranteed a starting position at the Regional. Because this was Memorial Day Weekend, track owner Vickie Roberts organized an appropriate pre-race ceremony on Sunday, which included a nine-flag color guard and a stirring rendition of "God Bless America," sung by Morgan Gentry. Oakley gave away more than $5000 worth of product in holeshot awards and other prizes. The Kawasaki factory-support truck was on hand, taking care of the green team. Gary Avans and Ziggen Braun handled the announcing chores. Sunday 's racing was highlighted by the match-up between Florida's Ricky Renner and Kentucky's Justin Sipes. Their 125cc Pro-Sport debate saw close finishes in both motos, in which Team Green's Renner claimed both wins, ahead of WBA Suzuki-backed Sipes. In the opening 250cc Pro -Sport moto, Renner and Sipes traded the lead back and forth before Renner could nail down the moto victory. Moto two saw Renner get a slow start while Sipes secured the moto win and the overall via his 2-1 score, over Renner's 1-2 tally. SYD/Maxxis-backed Auston Albers was third. Nick Depalo of Miami, Florida, got the holeshot in both motos, but a spill in moto one held him to 10-3 finishes and sixth overall. Derek Rogers won all four of his motos on Saturday. In Sunday's 125cc (12-15) Modified contest, however, Rogers had to settle for the runner-up honors, behind Missouri's Vince Friese, who posted a 2-1 score. Matt Bell got the holeshot in both motos and finished third overall. Rogers returned in 125cc B Modified racing, but he again had to settle for the silver after a botched start in moto two held him to a 1-8 tally. Kyle Meeks' 2-6 score was good for the gold. Tyler Horne's 9-1 finishes earned the bronze. Elimination motos had to be run to narrow the 125cc C Modified field. Gage Hartman and Steve Strange won their respective division motos, but each ran into problems in the final. Thor's Trevor Nelson won the class via his 4-1 score, ahead of Josh Fowler. Spy/FMF's Nick Gaines and MR2/Axo's Joey Savatgy squared off on both days, in four divisions of 65cc and 85cc (7-11) racing. After eight motos of close racing, it was a virtual tie: Gaines and Savatgy came away with two golds and two silvers apiece. EVENTS Trevor Boyl es i n a di sta nt thi rd. The second moto saw Prentice take the win, as Briar had troubles and got third. Boyles split the two for second. Zack Alkire was the fastest rider on the day, taking all the moto wins in the 125cc and 250cc combined classes of the A/B riders. Zack Crosby led the first two laps of the first 125cc A/B moto until Alkire stuffed him up the inside of corner two. That was all anybody saw of Alkire, as he motored away for the win. The second moto was more of the same, as Alkire had a big enough lead to wheelie up the entire front straight. Mason Batten led the entire moto of the first 65cc Beginner race to take the win, over Boyles. Paytin Using followed in third the entire time. Thorne Pauish was in fourth until the last lap, when a fall knocked him out of the top five. Tommy Maxey and Jared Landis battled back and forth, with Maxey getting the upper hand on the last lap to take over fourth, over Landis in fifth. Boyles pulled out all the stops in the second moto to lead the entire time and take the win, over Batten. Using, Maxey and Landes all stayed tight to finish, just as in the first moto.
