BY GUY COULSTON MILFORD, CA, JUNE 3 R ound eight of the AHRMA Post-Vintage National Series was held at one of the premier tracks in California, Honey Lake MX. Owned and operated by former factory racer Larry Wosick, Honey Lake is known for being a genuine GP-style track. With more than 400 vintage and post-vintage bikes on hand, this event was true "old-school motocross." Along with the familiar Japan- ese brands - Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki - there were the now-defunct but once-powerful European makes such as Maico, CZ, Bultaco, Montesa and Husqvarna. In the Over 50 Expert class, Dennis Spence dominated both motos on his Maico, over Honda pilot Steve Parker. At the end of the track's long fifth-gear start, it was Spence leading into the first turn, with Parker right behind. By the end of lap two, Parker was able to get by Spence, and the two battled wheel to wheel for the next two laps, with Parker just able to hold off Spence. Spence was patient, stalking Parker, knowing that it was unlikely the leader would make a mistake. At the end of lap four, Spence's patience paid off when he was able to get under Parker for the lead, and he just held on at the finish. In moto two, Spence again led into the first turn, just ahead of Parker. These two put on a great show for the next five laps, with Parker trying different lines, moving inside and out, trying anything to get past Spence. But Spence kept his cool and the lead for the second-moto win and the overall. In the Over 40 Intermediate race, Maico-mounted Brian Essary went 2-1 over Honda jockey Jeff Clausen's 1-2 for the overall. Essary and Clausen packed up and said goodbye to the rest of the field. Essary led the first lap, while Clausen suffered a bad start down in fourth. However, by the end of the second lap, Clausen was right on Essary's rear wheel. Clausen caught Essary by surprise and sneaked by on lap three, holding off Essary for the win. In moto two, Clausen absconded with the holeshot, while Essary was down in fourth. Essary patiently started picking off riders, and by the end of the fourth and penultimate lap he was right on Clausen's rear wheel. This time it was Essary's turn to sneak by Clausen on the last lap for the moto win - and the overall victory. Essary was also successful in the GP 500cc Intermediate class, going 1-1 for the overall. In the Over 40 Expert class, Maico man Don Garner put in an impressive 1-2 performance for the overall. What made it impressive was that Garner had to beat former factory pilot Dave Coupé. Though Coupé rarely makes a mistake or loses a moto, Garner has been showing impressive speed lately, and he was right behind Coupé when Coupé made an uncharacteristic mistake. Garner grabbed the lead and held it until the end. In moto two, Coupé got out into first and stayed there until the end, with Garner right behind. There were no mistakes this time, but Garner, with his 1-2 finishes, took the overall. Ol d bi kes equa l bi g fun. Check out the websi te a t www.AHRMA.org and then come out and check out a race! Sullivan's biggest win came in the Gran Prix race, which lined up all the class winners. Another successful Sulli- van, Mark, led the first three laps but tallied a DNF, and Andrew, riding in Mark's shadow, took the lead and remained there to the finish. It's too bad the weather didn't cooperate, as heavy rain all week long made the motocross course a muddy mess and also caused the cancellation of Sunday 's short- track event. The case-deep quagmire didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the motocross competitors, as more than 200 racers from five western states and Canada were on hand. I f t h e r a c i n g w a s n' t e n o u g h , a n i n d o o r motorcycle show and the large outdoor swap meet gave the thousands in attendance plenty of entertainment. Andrew made short work of the day 's opening contest - the combined Open Four- Stroke/Open Twin and 125cc A contest - but he did have initial challenges from Canadian Ken Burningham. Although the likable rider from Vancouver, British Columbia, couldn't hang with the much younger Andrew for more than a lap, he did a credible job of piloting the heavy Tri- BSA in the muddy conditions and trailed only Andrew and the top two 125cc riders, Mickey Fay Jr. and Jimmy Saxton, at the finish. Mark Sullivan's day started out much better than it ended, as the CZ rider grabbed the lead at the start of the Over 40 final and remained there to the finish. CZ pilot Keith Webster and another of the Sullivan clan, Eric, ran in close formation for much of the race until Eric faded and Kawasaki-mounted Pat Jacobsen filled the third-place position. Randy Brown, Eric Sullivan and Jeff Shelton completed the top six. The elder Sullivan, Mark, also dominated the Open Two-Stroke class, shaking off Tom Sheard to post his second of two overall wins on the day. Sheard was blazingly fast during the class' early morning qualifier and wasn't far off Mark's pace in the final, although Mark's CZ was the perfect match for the messy conditions. Sheard placed second, followed by Neil Giertsen, Fred Rockmore and Jon McAllister, who was aboard one of the many CZs on hand. Kawasaki rider Mike Harritt and Andrew Sullivan battled all day long in the Sportsman 250cc class. Harritt grabbed the lead at the g et-g o a nd sta yed upri g ht i n the soupy quagmire to narrowly edge Andrew at the finish. The two finished well ahead of the third- place rider, Shelton, while Ken Freiboth, Penton-mounted Matt Sullivan and CZ jockey Randy Hart completed the top six. Andrew Sullivan's win in the Gran Prix now places the teenager's name on the perpetual trophy, along with the likes of past winners Jim Pomeroy, Buck Murphy, Tom Rapp, Grayson Hart and Dallas Nyblod, among several others.
