JULY 5, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 48 BY JILL ASHWORTH PATTERSON GRIZZLY FLATS, CA, MAY 29 K TM's Jordan Brandt literally blew away the competition when he was the only one to complete seven laps to everyone else's six laps at the first-ever Leoni Meadows cross country race. The event, hosted by Earthscape Custom Dirtworks, was held on 1000 private acres at Leoni Meadows Christian Retreat Center, which is owned and operated by the Northern California Conference Association of Seventh- Day Adventists. "That's been my dream race," said the Pin It Motorsports/Fringe/Cycle Gear-sponsored Brandt, "to win one by being the only one on that lap." Dicks Racing/Fox/Pro Circuit-backed Brian Sperle was fastest off the line and he took the holeshot, but it didn't take long for Brandt to gain the lead and disappear from sight on the 9-mile-long, single-track and log-skid road course that was set at the 4000-foot elevation in the El Dorado National Forest area. Rains the week before the event doused everyone's fears of an overly dusty course, and conditions were awesome in the forest. ECD and LMCRC also had two watering trucks on hand to keep the open areas as damp and dust- free as possible for racers and spectators. Patrick Garrahan, the 2005 and defending series champion, and John Wear and Ryan Powell started off anywhere from about eighth to 15th place, but they quickly worked their way toward the front, joining up with Sperle and Rodney Spencer Jr., who were running third and second, respectively. Spencer pitted with clutch and brake-perch problems, and the others tried to make up ground and find Brandt. "The four of us [Garrahan, Wear, Sperle and Powell] had a real good battle going, with tons of position changes between us," said the Mach 1/NorCal Motorsports/RTT Stabilizers-supported Powell. "We freight-trained around some lappers, and then Patrick got away from us." The Maxxis/Motion Pro/FMF-sponsored Garrahan, who had just taken third overall the previous day at the Funky Chicken National Hare Scrambles in Elkton, Oregon, pulled away from the group, though he didn't succeed at reeling in the hard-charging Brandt. Jason Voss had also joined up with the group battling over third, and near the end of the race he was running in fourth. "On the last lap, Sperle and I went back and forth, even banging bars a couple of times," the Hlebo Brothers/FMF/Honda Peninsula-backed Voss said. "Then he got me on a turn before the finish line. It was really fun!" Brandt's overall victory (he won by several minutes) was his seventh win out of nine events he's entered this season - testimony to his speed and determination to claim the 2006 championship. "This was the best track I've ridden this year," Brandt stated. "It was fast-flowing single- track. I loved it!" Garrahan, Powell, Sperle, Voss, Wear, Spencer, Ty Spooner, Jonathan Davis and John Sicley rounded out the top 10 in the A/B race. In two other separate races, Chaz Halbert took the C Sportsman overall, and Randy King claimed top honors in the C Vet/Senior/Super- Senior/Gentlemen's/B-C Women's race. District 36/Moose Western Regional Cross Country Championship Series Round 10: Leoni Meadows Hare Scrambles Brandt Leaves 'em All Behind at Leoni Meadows Jordan Brandt charged to the overall victory at the first-ever Leoni Meadows Hare Scrambles, round 10 of the District 36/Moose Western Regional Cross Country Championship Series. PHOTO BY JOHNNA DAVIS BY CLAY LIGHT ALBANY, OR, JUNE 4 Y amaha-mounted Josh Hill's domination of the Pro classes continued at round two of the CMC Pac West Motocross Nationals, held at Albany Motorsports Park. Despite the incredibly muddy conditions, the rider from Yoncalla, Oregon, sloshed his way to victory in the 125cc, 250cc, Open and Four-Stroke class- es and is undefeated thus far in the early stages of the 10-round series. Washington's Brad Hagseth pulled out of competition after an early morning practice crash, opening up the door for Honda-mounted Nick Foister in the Vet (Over 25) Pro class. Foister took advantage of Hagseth's misfortune and landed dual moto wins in the class after placing second to Hagseth at round one. Foister was also impressive in the opening 250cc Pro moto, placing third to Hill and Oregon's Kevin Rookstool, although Foister didn't finish moto two, a race that became a Hill runaway after Hill got around the early race leader, Rookstool, and then pulled away to victory. Rookstool (who qualified for the Hangtown National in the Lites class) was a fast starter all day long, including the first 125cc Pro moto. It didn't take Hill long, though, to get past the southern Oregon speedster, and Hill proceeded on to victory to cap off his second 1-1 sweep of the day. Rookstool's two second-place finishes earned him second overall, ahead another second-year Pro, Adam Metzler, whose 3-3 finishes completed the podium positions. Brandon Thomas (4-4) overcame a nasty moto- two turn-one crash to finish fourth overall, ahead of Ian Naccarato and Idaho's Drew Brown, who completed the top six overall. While Hill was the lone four-class winner on the day, there were several other stellar performers in the muddy conditions. Yamaha rider Jeremiah Sparks contested three classes and came close to a three-win day; Sparks won the 250cc and Before The Hill Junior classes and placed a close second to Cody Hockema in the 125cc class. Justin Hill, Josh's younger brother, dominated two classes, taking the top positions in the 65cc (9-11) and 65cc Open classes. Washington's Heath Hamblen improved his results from the previous round by winning the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes. Twenty-six riders braved the rain and mud in the competitive Supermini class, but it was Idaho's Trevor Mort taking home the first-place trophy after winning the opening moto and placing second in moto two. Honda-mounted Austin Ullrich, who placed third to Mort and Washington's Rook Jewell in moto one, came back strong in moto two, although his moto-one finish thwarted his overall chances, as Mort finished close behind him in moto two and Mort used a 1-2 to top Ullrich (3-1), Jewell (2-5), Jake Warren (5-4) and Idaho's Ryan Personette (4-6). Honda rider Vanessa Florentino showed some pretty good speed en route to her Women's-class victory, as the Edgewood, New Mexico, resident won both motos. Jenni Wilson, one of the top Northwest Women's- class riders, trailed Florentino in both contests. She also placed third overall in one of the day's largest classes, the 125cc Junior class, trailing only Hockema and Sparks, but finishing ahead of Travis McClinton and William Ries and 23 other riders overall.
