C Y C L E N E W S • JULY 5, 2006 49 BY BERT AND TYLER SHEPARD DAYTON, OH, JUNE 3 F or the 12th time in the past 15 years, George Roeder made the Old Time Newsies event in Dayton his best payday of the year. The 36th running of the event that benefits numerous char- ities in Dayton would once again top all non-national events in the country, with a $42,600 payout. Roeder would sweep the 20th annual Edgar "Fergie" Fuhr Dash For Cash and the 750cc/1000cc Expert main. Joe Kopp made his trip to the heart- land worthwhile with a win in the 450cc division of the AMA's Hot Shoe Series. Salinas, California's Steve Bonsey also made his presence known to Midwesterners with a dominating perform- ance in the 450 Pro-Sport division. As usual, the evening started off with scratch heats. For the big-bike Experts, a win was a ticket to the Dash For Cash. Dan Gedeon, Shawn Clark, Jared Mees and Chris Evans collected their passes with wins. The last pass to the five-rider dash would be the second-placed rider in the fastest heat; Roeder would later thank Mees for winning the fastest qualifier. The Dash was over after the first corner. Roeder regained his dominating style and led Mees and Gedeon to the checkers. Dominic Beaulac and Sam Halbert were the bookends for the front row of the 450cc Expert final. Beaulac got the holeshot and started what appeared to be a disappearing act. Kopp and Evans circulated in the Canadian's wake. Beaulac did what he does best - ride the top of the raceway - on a brand-new Carl Patrick-built Honda. Kopp was mounted on the same bike on which he won the event with last year - Larry Zumbrun's Rotax. Kopp worked the bottom and closed on Beaulac. Kopp almost ran out of time. The Mica, Washington, racer assumed the point just in time for the win, which put him in the lead in the Hot Shoe Series. The five Experts that would run both mains - Kopp, Beaulac, Evans, Ricky Marshall and Sam Halbert - took a break while the 450cc Pro-Sport riders gridded for their main. Evans would be the only Expert to contest both mains and the Dash. Ben Evans got the holeshot in the Pro-Sport main, with Steve Bonsey on his rear fender. Bonsey took over the point on the second tour and disappeared. Ohio's Bob Descenna was on the move, shooting from sixth to second in two laps. Descenna and Brock Schwarzenbacher battled over the place and show money. Descenna barely controlled second place at the line. Bonsey was pleased with his effort. "I had two seconds so far in the Hot Shoe Series," he explained, "and I wanted a win." The win put the Californian in the driver's seat for the series. In the 750cc/1000cc event, Kopp brought out the red flag with a get-off in turn four. Kopp was none the worse for the wear, but his Harley's front end was bent beyond repair. On the restart, Roeder assumed the point and was gone! Clark and Beaulac argued over second, with the nod going to Beaulac. Gedeon received some of the $30,000 in contingency with his fourth-place ride in the main. "I was sure I could win, but George went too fast!" said Beaulac. PHOTO BY BERT AND TYLER SHEPARD BY GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE, CA, MAY 29 R icky Hemme appeared to be in a class of hi s own a s he tota l l y domi na ted the 45-minute-long Dunestown Gran Prix 450cc Four-Stroke class at Los Angeles County Race- way during the fifth and final round of the 29th annual running of the California Racing Club/Riders' Choice Performance-sponsored J.B. Memorial Dunestown Series. Hemme made his intensions clear as he put his Troy Lee Designs/Hinson-backed CR450F out to an immediate lead, ahead of Tony Sulek, Tony Pulliam and Dustin Pulliam. Johnny Lovett was the first to made a move, getting around the father-and-son duo of Tony and Dustin Pulliam by the end of lap two to run in third place. Meanwhile, up front, Hemme was setting a blistering pace that saw his lead become insurmountable by the midway point, and barring any major disaster on his part, he looked untouchable. Sulek held on to the runner-up position for almost 25 minutes before Lovett dropped him back to third. Kasey Morris was slowly working his way toward the front, and he picked off Lovett with time running out to earn the second-place trophy on his Six Six One/Spy-sponsored KXF. Dustin Pulliam also found a way around Lovett during the final stages for third, with Sulek salvaging fifth, ahead of Tony Pulliam and Dale McCoy. Nick Sanchez was equally impressive in the 250cc Four-Stroke class. He bolted out to an early lead on his FMF-backed CR250F and went uncontested for the entire 45-minute affair. Cody Stauffer had his Kawasaki in second place for about 20 minutes before Matt Tribbey was able to reel him in for the pass. The long race played into the hands of Justin Seeds, as he methodically worked up from his midpack start to overtake Tribbey for second place with only a handful of minutes remaining. Tribbey held on for third, over Stauffer, Chris Pulliam and Jordan Burns. Thirty 125cc Beginners were lined up bar to bar and when the green flag dropped for the dead-engine start. It was RM125-mounted Cody Biggs with the holeshot, ahead of Andrew Wagner, Joe Jones and Trevor Owens. Biggs put a few seconds on the pack during the opening circuit and would maintain his cushion for a good part of the race, while Jones, Owens, Nick Greco and Troy Armstrong all argued over second place. Jones came on strong during the final few laps for the well-deserved victory on his Yamaha. Both Armstrong and Greco slipped past Biggs to finish in second and third, respectively, with Tyler Wells rounding out the top five finishers.
