pages of newspapers promoting the country's
exciting and dangerous new sport. Later, news
of many tragic events saw it all crash down.

motorcycle delivery boy in Los Angeles in 1910. Local
competitions followed until he enlisted in the Army and
put his experience to use in Europe during World War I.
He later became a successful motorcycle racer, rising to
the level of National Champion in 1921. Despite serving
for thirty years as a Pasadena, California motor patrol
officer, he set numerous speed records through the 1920s
and '30s at Daytona Beach, the Bonneville Salt Flats, and
a stretch of public road near San Bernardino.
