After a crash on his out-lap in
qualifying, Cameron Beaubier
was left without a recorded time
and forced to start 21st on the
grid in both race one and race
two. In the opening start, he
surged forward 13 positions to
eighth before a clutch issue cut
his charge short and sent him
to pit lane, capping what looked
like a disastrous Saturday.
As his Warhorse HSBK Ducati
crew scrambled to repair the
bike, a red flag halted the race
due to an incident elsewhere on
track. Fong, who had crashed
from second place just before
the stoppage, was ruled out of
the restart.
When racing resumed, Scholtz
led ahead of JD Beach (Attack
Performance Progressive Yama
-
ha Racing) and Kelly. That order
held briefly until Beach encoun-
tered issues and retired, promot-
ing Kelly and Cameron Petersen
(Wrench Motorcycles Ducati).
Beaubier, meanwhile, began
another recovery, climbing to
11th on lap one and closing
rapidly. By lap nine, he was
pressuring Petersen, making
the pass with three laps remain
-
ing. He then chased down Kelly,
finishing just 0.316 of a second
behind to complete a remark-
able comeback podium.
In the Superbike Cup, Andrew
Lee topped the class aboard a
Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade
SP.
Race two was a tighter but
less dramatic affair, with Fong
claiming victory after a pro
-
longed duel with Scholtz.
Running second early, Fong
shadowed Scholtz for 17 laps,
VOLUME ISSUE APRIL , P93
out there," Herrin said after race two.
"Yesterday, my goal was to try to get
in front and just put some laps down
and try to separate the field a little
bit. After the mistake I made yester-
day, today, I just decided to play it
safe and wait a little bit. Even with
waiting until halfway through, every-
body was so anxious to just try and
pass each other that I had no other
choice than to just try and go to the
front and put down some laps and
see who can go. I was getting a little
bit nervous just the way everybody
was passing on the back straight
through the kink and stuff like that.
But I had a lot of fun today."
95 MATTHEW CHAPIN
11TH/1ST TWINS CUP
Matthew Chapin finished outside
the top 10 in race one but led all five
laps for the win in the restart of the
shortened, red-flagged race two. "I
got the dream start, I guess," Chapin
said after race two. "Came out P2
and then tried to make quick work
of Bodie [Paige], you know, get past
my teammate there, because I knew
he had some bike problems before
the red flag. Just kind of wanted to
stay all out of that and then just put
my head down, tried to build some
consistency, click off some laps. Af-
ter a race like yesterday, you know,
struggling with a few bike problems,
coming out here and dominating the
field pretty good, I feel amazing and
it was much needed."

Bobby Fong (50)
