P148 LOOKING BACK March 19, 1986 Eddie Lawson won the Daytona 200 40 years ago and was featured on the cover, along with Jimmy Filice (17) leading a heat race. Kevin Schwantz and Fred Merkel joined Lawson on the podium... Ricky Johnson won the Daytona Supercross, and Keith Turpin won the 125cc Pro- Am race... Ted Boody edged out Steve Morehead for the Daytona Half Mile victory... Ed Lojak outdueled Johnny Martin to win the Gainesville Hare Scrambles. Johnny Martin to win the Gainesville Hare Scrambles. March 16, 1976 Nineteen-year-old Venezuelan Johnny Cecotto was featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago after winning the Daytona 200, riding a Yamaha. Gary Nixon was second and Pat Hennen third; Kenny Roberts won the 100-mile Lightweight-class race... We also covered the Daytona Supercross, which featured a three-moto format. Tony DiStefano and Jimmy Weinert traded moto wins in the first two, with DiStefano winning the third after Weinert crashed in the first turn. March 13, 1996 Jeremy McGrath got the lion's share of the cover 30 years ago for winning the AMA Motocross National opener at Gainesville. Doug Chandler got a piece of the cover for winning the Formula USA race at Daytona... We had coverage of the Gilles Lalay Classic won by Stephane Peterhansel and Laurent Charbonnel (they tied)... We reviewed the 1996 Triumph Trophy 900... Goat Breker announced his plans to bring back the Elsinore Grand Prix. first two, with DiStefano winning the third after Weinert crashed in the first turn.
