in the series points, just one behind Shimoda in third. "They didn't prep the gates all day, so I didn't get good traction out of the gate and was buried off the start," Davies said. "It was a good comeback. I did what I could. I wanted that win, but still a good ride." Last week's winner, Brown, took third at Daytona and holds the red plate for another week. It was a much quieter ride for Brown this time around as he battled to stay in the top five for the opening half of the race. His teammate Davies helped up the ante, and Brown followed him through to what looked like a fourth-place finish. Shimoda's mishap late in the race pushed both of the Star Yamahas onto the podium and gave Brown third at the checkers. He contin - ues to hold a two-point lead over Hammaker. "It was a battle," Brown said. "Not the best start. I took a gam- ble with my gate, and we chose the wrong one. It happens. We battled and were there late, even after other riders made mis - takes, to salvage a third. I can't be too mad about it. We're in good shape [in points] and will keep doing our thing." Shimoda looked good in sec- ond but crashed with three laps to go and dropped to fourth. Worse yet, this mistake moves him down from second to third in points standings. "Much better starting point to a day, but that mistake was on me," Shimoda said. "But only two rounds in and happy with progress, we [are] only going to be better." Daxton Bennick rounded out the top five and is fifth in the se - ries points.
