Risk
Risk is something
we face everyday.
Whether it be commuting
to work,
partici-
pating
in
a sport, or making a new career
move. A calculated risk separates those
who
are successful at the above ard those
who are not.
How does a
professional
football
player
(who
is required
to
wear
a helmet by
the
NFL) operate a 160 hp motorcycle
without
a helmet? lt's absurd! Now, don't
get
me
wrong
-
a car could turn out in front of any
one of us while we ride.
There's an inher-
ent
risk in
riding, as with most
of the things
worth doinS
in
life.
But, come on
-
take the
proper precaution,
l'm
pretty
sure a Super
Bowl bonus could easily
pay
for
a nice Shoei
or Arai helmet.
I hope
Ben Roethlisberger returns to the
NFL and is 100-percent
healthy. But,
because of his
decision, we responsible
motorcyclists are
grouped
with
all the
other
"squids"
that make the
public
look
down upon us
-
and our transportation
decision. l4otorcycling
is at an all-time high
in America. The last thing
we need is the
bad
press
this incident has
already brought
upon us.
Maybe Ben will make it
up to us. IYaybe,
he'll actually assume responsibility for
his
decision and not
just
blame it on the other
driver or motorcycling
in
general.
Maybe?
Regardless, perhaps
this incident will
open the eyes of fellow
riders who ride
without helmets. lf a
Super Bowl hero
can
get
hurt without a helmet, then so
can anyone.

Let's review
-
no helmet
(Ben
Roethlisberger refuses
to wear one because
he
"likes
the freedom") and no valid
motor-
cycle license, which
puts
him in
a
quesrion-
able skillset, and impacts with vehicle driv-
en by an old lady
that turns in front of him.
Hmmm... it's got
to be that damn high-
powered
Hayabusa's fault.

So let me
get
this right: A helmet-wearing
offensive football
player
refuses to wear
a
helmet
while riding his 500-pound street-
bike among a city full
of SO00-plus-pound
defensive-line vehicles. Life is
so
ironicl
It's a case
of
another person
with more
dollars than cents
(sic).

Control
Henny Ray Abrams i5 right
when he writes
about traction control- I
read an afticle on
SuperbikePlanet,com that l'1at Mladin
wrote.
ln his afticle he
talked about how
traction control should be
openly used and
tested in
Superbike racing. The basics ofthe
context stated that
the
factory
riders are, in
fact,
test
riders
for technology. lf
you
don't
test it,
you
will never see it on
the street.
He mentioned the fact that some
riders
are makang malor money
to race, but if
technology doesn't move forward, the
con-
sumer is hurt
in the end, lbelieve this to be
true. l'd love
to see a factory
CBR|oooRR
delivered with a
$1500
upgrade traction-
control system.
Sounds
low (on price),
but
when
you
think about it,
wasn't it about 20
years
ago
that auto makers were
