MOTO ON€
Pastmna ended up on the
ground
on the
first lap while
Ward
and Henn/ started to
split,
The veterans
pulled
away
quickly
and
were toSether
when Ward
overshot a
iump
in the left end dirt section.
"When
I saw him
go
off that berm, I
was scared,' Henry who'd set
fast
time in
Superpole, said.
"l
froze for
a lap.
I
was
hoping he was okay, because he went off
that thing high, sideways. lt was
just
so
scary Looking from where I was, I was
iust
hopinS he was okay. lt kind of
reminds me what I did in lYaryland. I don't
want to see that happen to anybody."
"My
foot fell off and I
grabbed
a hand-
ful and couldn't
get
to the brake and went
over that big huge berm, it was like a
freestyle ramp," Ward said.
"l
was lucky
to keep
ir
straighr.
I was,
like, 30
feer rn
the air on flat
ground.
"l
came back and I was running fourth
or fifth. I felt okay - considering that. And
then, I
iust
fell over and the bike
quit.
I
couldn't
get
it started. That's one of those
deals when the bike's that hot, they don't
like to start. And then, I
just
kicked and
kicked about 100 times and lwas done."
Henry had nearly a five second lead on
the fifth
lap
and
he grew it
sl€htly and
safely.
"l
just
kind of
put
it
on cruise control,"
he said.
"l
knew
Jeff
was
out
-
iust
try to
salvage as many
points
as I can
get."
Burkhart moved up two spots on the
founh lap, from fourth to second,
passinS
Kunzel and Fillmore. Burkhan moved
away from the
pair,
taking a secure founh,
"Made
a mistake in the dirt and went
back to lifth,'' in the early
going,
"and just
had to make my way back up through
them," Burkhart said.
"Got
up to second
and I'm happy with that."
Then Fillmore
did
the
same.
"l
battled with l*1ark
[Burkhart]
a little
bit;
he
obviously
was a bit faster and more
aggressive
in
the
dart,'' Fillmore said.
''He
pulled
away from me and it ended up
being
a mild race. No battle."
The battle behind was down to Kunzel
and Nicoll, the teammates together from
lap five to nearly the end-
Nicoll made the
pass
on
lap nine and
put
nearly
four
seconds on
his
teammate the
last two laps.
Kunzel lamented being
able to onry
ride hard
for half
the race.
"l
don't
know"
he be8an,
"l
can
go
the speed only five
laps and then I don't know
what happens."
losh
Chisum
was sixth
after
passing
Micky Dymond
on the final lap.
MOTO TWO
"l
really wanted to
go
out in the sec-
ond moto there and win it, and
lust
put
my head down and
just
try to do the best
lcould. lt worked
out well,
Ward
said.
The lead over Henry was already over
2.5
seconds on the third lap and
Ward
grew
it to nearly five. He
backed off to
win
his third race of the
year
by 3.202
seconds.
"l
gapped
them
prett/ good,
but
he
(Henry) had
a
good
weekend,"
Ward
said.
"He
had a
good
weekend, so l'm
sure
in his
mind to
get
second and only
lose three
points
to me...he
played
it
smart. I know he wasn't letting me

"l

Henry

just
seemed
like I
couldn't
hook
up out there

stan flowing riSht from the
get-go.
I felt
like I wasn't on
pace
right in the begin-
ning. I tried a couple of times to make up
a little time and made some mistakes. I
didn't want to
go
down in that race. I
wanted to stay up and come out of
the
weekend ahead in
points
as far as where I
was before. lt was a
pretty
successful
weekend for me. I would have liked to
have
won both, but one-two is really not
too
bad."
Burkhan nearly
got
taken out in a first
turn melee. That kept
him
in
fifth, which
is where he stayed for
the
first half
of the
race. On the sixth lap he made his move,
jumping
from fifth
to third.
"l
rode
behind the
guys
until I thought
l could
pass
them," he said.

Team Red Bull KTM HMC'S Mitch Hansen
was happy to see the last ofthe three-in-a-
row races. The hardship wai les.ened by
having two in his home state of Wisconsin.

tyvo of them were in

we

the bikes," he said.'iAnd these

we have the X-Garnes coming

we

GP Husqvarna's Troy Herfoss was taking
his banged up body home to Ausrralia for a
national round. Herfoss bea! himself up in a
practice
crash the day before Saturday's
race.
"For
sure, I've
got
a mce this week-

and
it will
be
tough," he said.
"But
a two-week break and
get
myself fixed up and, hopefully, be in the
