I iust rode as hard as I could and finished eighth. ln the second moto, I got another good stan and just put my head down. Upfront, Reed had passed early leaders Honda-mounted Antonio Baldi Jr and Gibson on the second lap and was tryinS to make a clean break before Carmichael arrived at the front, but Carmi€hael was quickly on Reed's tail. He dogged the Australian until lap fou( when Carmichael made an agSressive pass for the lead just before the mechanic's area. "Ricky just came up the inside and the turn was really slick," Reed said. "l think the only way to pass was ro get in there hot and kind of bump me out. I would have done the same thing to him." From there. Carmichael would once again pull away from Reed, but the differ- ence would never be as great as that of the first moto. Meanwhile, I'4illsaps had moved into third, and Windham had passed up into sixth position, where he again found him- self behind Preston and Wey. Windham only took three laps to make a pass this time and then set out after we, For two laps, Wey held his ground against Windham before he, too, gave way. 36 JUNE 28,2006 . "l didn't really Sive myself the best of chances, Wndham said. ''l laid it down in the first moto and made things hard for myself. This track is all right for passing, but you never want to be [coming from the rearl no matter what lrack you're on. It was just a tough day. I had to get by these guys and I just had to go where the others weren't and it worked for me and I moved up." Wey claimed his best-ever National finish with foufth overall. "Budds Creek is usually not one of my best tracks, but I wanted to do good here," Wey said. "Today, I Save it every- thing I had, but Windham was riding good, for sure." With four rounds in the books, Carmichael extended his lead in the title chase and is a full 20 points ahead of Reed, 192- 172, while Wey ( 122) moved into good for me so far, but I had a better weekend than I did last week and I am excited about Red Bud coming up.
