But what Williamson counted on was the narrow strip of grass that choice afforded him, and it worked, as he hooked up and flew, while the deep, dry peat soil comprising the rest of the start straight sucked up all the power for allthe other bikes. So, Williamson swooped around the outside and grabbed the lead as they headed into the little chicane, over a small bridge and into the following field and woods se€tion, ''Once I got into the lead I iust put the hammer down and tried to pull awax" Williamson said. "l didn't want anybody to key off me. That was my whole strategy for the race. ''lt seemed to work pretty good. When they were right behind me and they could key off me, they could just cruise, no problem.
