Mororrog 334 Sourhvvick. MA Round 3 June t I, 2006 ?OOE Togota AMA Motocross Championshlp PrEs€nt€d bg FMF something like that. I felt really good." But not for long. "That was the first time - what? - in three races now that I didn't hit, like, a fourlap wall and I wasn't tired going to the halfway," he said. "Then, riSht after the hal6,,r'ay, my back started cr-amPing up and I couldn't even stand up - went down- hill from there." By the haltway point, Carmichael was well into the lead. "You know, I iust had to get by; that was my goal," he said. 'And I could see [Stewart] was stanin8 to labor a little bit. Davi was right on my tail. He was all over us. l'm like, 's-t, James you need to get going or Hoss [Millsaps] is Soing to pass us."' So he took the lead from Stewart in the looping left-hand bowl turn that the start straight pours into, on the fifth lap. 'iktually, it was on this bi8 oval thing, this big, sandy berm, whooped-out thing," he said, adding that he had a "sweet, sweet line. And I iust got a good drive of{ that thin8." The plan was to be more aggressive in the second moto and get to the front quicker. "l was iust kind looking for a place to pass," he said. ''l was hanging back a little bit, because ldidn't feel like eatin8 dirt like I did the first moto. lt wasn't planned like that. I was iust kind of picking and choosing where I could. lt wasn't like I could pass him there. I knew lhad to make a pass earlier and not ,ust sit there and follow him like I had been. lt's a bad habit to get into for sure. When I did pass him, though, he wasn't cutting me no slack. He was drivinS in. I knew he would do that - iust got be careful and watch out a liftle bit." 'Just from not riding for two weeks, I kind of started making a few mistakes," Stewart explained. "He got away. I was kind of favoring [the left knee] a little more than normally I would. lt definitely hindered me I felt like, as far as my ridinS style." But, he added with a smile, "ln the race, you just go for it aD,way." The lead built quickly. Four seconds on lap six; it was six on the seventh and eighth, then nine on the ninth and 13 on the loth. Stewart's was a tactical ride at this point. The ground he was losing to Carmichael, he was gaining on Millsaps - at least once the Honda rider's back went out. And he still had eight seconds on Reed. when Reed took second from Millsaps on the lfth lap. The end came quickly. On the fastest pan of the track, the engine quit off the face of a jump, 'And that was it." Stewart said. "That was the end of the story" His bike reponedly broke a rod. "Everything's fine," he said when asked if he'd done further damage to his left knee. "l'm iust sore. I didn't hit my head. Everything else is good, so l'm fine. I kind of reaggravated everything. l'm still sore from two week ago. lt's fine..lust go back and get checked tomorrow when I get home and go from there." Since it was the last lap, Carmichael had no idea of Stewart's mislortune and cruised to a lg-second victory. "l think this race iust basi(ally comes down to how strong you are really," he said. "You've got to have speed obviously to win, but how strong you are, that was my strong point today." And he was strong despite his second moto rear shock giving bad feedback. "l didn't feel comfortable in the second moto," he said. "My shock, dude, that thing - I looked like 'Johnny O' [O'l'4ara] in Daytona '86. lt was embarrassing. I felt like an idiot. I don't want to see pictures of me this weekend, because I know it's ugly-" Reed was trying to catch Reed at the end when he came up on the accident scene. ''Right at the end there I sawJames and just kind of just put my head down to try to catch him and then I come up over the hill and he was on the ground," he said. "Looked pretty scary I hope he's all right." From the start of the day, Reed said he never felt right. "l really wanted to get up there this weekend and battle with those Suys and latch all over them, but I really struggled to get good rhythm at the beginning of the motos this weekend," he said. "Davi - I was lucky I was a little stronger than him to get him at the end there. Yeah, ,ust had to kind of get in my rhythm and iust kind of go at it after that." Millsaps finished 50 seconds behind Reed after being slowed by back trouble. But he was still on the podium and happy to be there. '' 'Bubba's' the reason why l m 8efting up here," he said, referring to .lames Stewart by his former nickname. "lt's not good to say, but every time he goes down, I get on the podium - at least the last two times, l'm going to take this third. "l'm goinS to Bo home and just work, get past what I'm strugSling with right now, which rs arm pump and ever/thing else. lf I don't get arm pump I get some- thing else." l'4illsaps said the leaders were still in sight when, 'All of a sudden my back started cramping up and lcouldn't even stand up any more." Millsaps finished the moto with I I sec- onds on SoBe/Samsung [''lobile Honda's Kevin Windham. Windham packaged a first-moto fifth with a second-moto fo'rrth for fifth overall, his best finish of the year on a fack he doesn't like. "l rode like fifth and should have got Iifth." he said. Carmichael heads to Budds Creek with a l4-point lead, 142-128 over the very consistent Reed. Reed has finished second or third in every moto this year. l''lillsaps is third with l0l points.
