Grond Prix Ro(e.s Union. Northeost Region Round lr Surnrnia Point Ro.ewoy Smallwood, Welsh UVin in West Virginia SUMMIT POINT, WV, MAY 6.7 The frrrt of the USGPRU Northeast ReSion rounds took I place at the classrc Summit Point main circuit. lhe newly formed ASRA Series hosted the event, and more than 40 USG" PRU racers joined them for a great weekend in the West Vr- ginia count./side. Scott Smallwood threw down the gaunder by setrin8 the best time in l25cc GP qualifying - a l:72.421 - despire the sliShtly cool track temperatures. A mere tench of a second behind him was the current points leader, Canadian Alex Welsh. John Hjelm claimed third, only a tenth of a second behind Welsh. The top eight qualifying positions were less than a se€ond off of the leader's time. Brian Surtees, aboard his Yamaha T2250. dominated the 250cc GP qualifying. Welsh rode his Honda PS250 to second place, but at almost a full second behind Surtees. Fellow Canadian Matt Cooper pulled out all the stops to finish in third. As predicted, the l25cc GP ra(e was extremely close, with 22 riders all tr),in8 to squeeze through turn one all at the same time. Welsh popped out first and put his head down and staned pressing his advantage. Unfortunacely, the rest of the pack wasn't as lucky: A pair of crashes involving four riders, rwo turns, and one red flaE mean( that (hrs l4-lap .ace was Sorng to start all over. On the restart, series president Stewan Aitken-Cade nailed the starl and went from seventh on the Srid to third, behind Welsh and Smallwood. That didn't last long, as Mike Orien rode his Eellin8er-tuned missile past and was quickly followed by Todd Pu.kett. The six-rider battle for the lead raged on for the first four laps. until Aitken-Cade's motor expired and he was forced to watch the rest of the race. Welsh and Smallwood put a small gap on Orien and Puckett, making for a pair of excelleflt battles for the crowd to choose from. On lap nine, Welsh was sittinS comfonably behind Smallwood when he hit a patch of oil-dry left from an earlier incid€nt and crashed 8oin8 into the ver/ high-speed turn one. This handed Smallwood his firsr win o{ the season. Orien and Puckett slashed and hacked at each other until lapped araffic separated them and Orien couldn\ close back up on Pucketr. The 250cc GP race was an absolute blowout, as Welsh 8ot the holeshot into turn one and never looked back. Surtees had a bit of trouble at the start but rode the wheels off of his Yamaha to close to only lwo seconds off the leader Welsht crew indicated this, and he was able to dial up the pace and maintain the separation for the full race. Cooper rode a lonely race to finish third, ahead of lefi Fed€rici. Novice Sam Clark rode an amazing r]ce aboard a brand-new RS 125 to finish fifth. RE5uLrs 125 GP: l. S.ott Shallwood (Hon); ?.
