His double win and seven in a row perform- ance are impressive statistics, and the way he got them was also the hard path as he held off a determined Noriyuki Haga and his Yamaha l'4otor ltalia mount in each race. The real story is of another Troy, the only man who still had a reasonably real- istic chance of hunting down Bayliss - Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra's Troy Corser. His crash in a first-corner mce- one smashup of epic (and eventually comic) proportions was the start of the real rot, his earlier lOth place in wet Superpole qualirying was hardly a help, with Bayhss on the front row Rejoining after the high-noon melee, he fell on the restart. and eventually had to retire, despite remounting dead-last. lt was the second time he had crashed in a race this year. Plachine glitches stopped him from charSing on in race two. and he scored a measly l0 points all day. Hence the 76- points lead Bayliss enjoys over him right now and the 92 Bayliss has over new third-place rider Ha8a. "Well, by our standards, that was a day to forget," Corser said. "lt didn't start well when I was hit from behind in the first tum on the opening lap of the first race. I was lu€ky because the race was red-flagged, and I was able to get back to my Sarage and jump onto the spare bike for the restart. But we had only done about four laps in the dry on it and, although it should've been rhe same, it felt very differ- ent. The front tire was too hard and I lost control in the final chicane after one lap. I got back on and tried to carry on. but it was no use. ln mce nvo, I had problems with the throttle response and that made the bike very difficult to ride. I just could not get the power on when I wanted and every time I tried to do what I do normal- ly, I nearly crashed. We had a similar prob- lem last season, so now we'll have to sit down and work out how to solve it. I sup- pose the only good news is that in my two falls today I never hurt myselfl'' So that's the big story lt was bad news for all except Bayliss and his crew in this year when close competition seemed almost guaranteed. ''ln 2002 I was lucky enouSh to win six in a row and I was thinking about that before this weekend - but on Friday and Saturday I was throwing myself down the road getting sorer and sorer, and I thought it was maybe a good time just to get some points, but racing changes your view ofthings," Bayliss said.
