teer chase the factory rider off the line, around the first turn and on to the main straightaway. There were no surprises - until both riders were suddenly sliding instead of riding. Burkhart was the first one to get hit by the one-two pun€h of rainwater and ungrooved slicks; McDonald was next. Both riders still led the lield down the main straight, flat on their bellies. Rick Crist happily tiptoed past both riders and into the lead. He had been paying attention to the weather forecast all week long and was running a set of 3-year-old cast-off rain tires he had found in a buddy's garage. Crist and the rest of the pack had driven by long before either bike caught up to its slip-n-slide rider. Once upright, both riders kicked the mud off and the motor on. I''lcDonald began the second lap of the race at the very back of the pack. Burkhart was not that much further ahead. By the crossed flags, however, both riders were nearly air-dried and running in second and third, respectively. Crist was still defiantly holding on to the race line as the three leaders streaked under the white flag. Driving through the infield for the last time. McDonald saw his chance. Burkhart seemed to get parked iust long enough for him to squirt past and into second place. Then, without any hesitation, he went inside Crist two turns later and took the lead. When 14cDonald got the checkered flag, every Canuck in the place went wild, eh! By the second moto, Burkhart had mounred new rain tires, and he easily checked out on the rest of the field. Crist's cast-off tires also ''checked out," so he was unable to give chase. l4cDonald rode most of the race by himself and finished in second place - a lonely sec- ond, but when combined with his win in the first moto, that put him ahead of Burkhart and Crist in the final points standings- Clrl CrRcLEvr[E RacEwaY PApk CrRcr.EvrLr.E, OHro Rtsuss: r aY l3-14.2006 (RouNo 2) SPORT MlNl: l. pdo C.srin Crarn)i 2.
