lnfineon Rocevroy Sonomo, CA Yates came back at Duhamel at the end, but Duhamel made the podium by half a second. Pafts Unlimited Ducati's Neil Hodgson was fifth, 29 seconds behind the winner and all alone. His teammate Ben Bostrom was next, narrowly in front of Kawasaki's Tommy Hayden, who he'd passed on lap 12. Then put a gap to American Honda's Zemke, the Paso Robles resident suffering with front-brake problems. The first of the Jordan Suzukis was ninth, ridden by Steve Rapp, with Honda- mounted privateer Larry Pegram by him- self in l0th. Spies repeated his disappearinS act on Sunday, but not quite as qulckly. Mladin sat on him for the fi rst half of the race, the lead lust under two seconds. And by then, Mladin said, his chance was gone. "The race - lthought we were 8oing to have something there at the start of the race, but as my crew chief [Peter Doyle] said, lwent to sleep be&veen laps four and 10, and then I came alive a8ain. lsort of agree with him," Mladin said. l'4ladin had been forced onto his sPare bike after crashing in the Carousel in the l0-minute morning warm-uP session, but wasn't usinS it as an excuse. Spies margin of victory was 5.290 sec- onds. "lt s definitely hard. you know seeing L2, 1.5 on your board for 20 laps and it says number I under it, because I know who he is and I raced against him all last year, and he kicked my butt the whole year; I know what he can do," Spies said. I But he hasn't been able to do it yet this year, and Spies aims to keep it that way- ''l'm goin8 to try to keep winning races," Spies said. "l want to get over a race [points] lead if that's possible, Just keep winning and that's all you can do to win the championship. You deflnitely can't start runnin8 around and, you know con- serving. lf it keep6 coming - it's not easy, but this weekend was the easiest week- end we've had. I could do it on my own and keep him at bay when I wanted. And when he traed to do stufl, I could counter rt pretty easy. The bike was iust working reallygood, and if it continues to work like that, l'llwin every race this year if it's pos- sible. I mean, l'm not going to just slow down for the championship. That proba- bly will not happen. lf thin8s keep happen- ing the way they're goin8, yeah, we're going to go for race wins- We're definitely not going for championship yet." Mladin appreciates Spies' position and isn't used to being the puGuer "The last few years l've been used to pufting on a fairly hard tire and sort of con- trolling the race in the front a lot of the times, which Ben's doing right now," he said. "we've 8ot some ground to make up, and l'm looking forward to h. That race 30 MAY3r, 2006 . cYcLE NEws AMA SUPERBIKC F.ourla. 6/7 'rrqy 2O-2I, 20()6 AMA sup€rbik€ champ \ \ \ l-.' j f ! Fn,.
