Vuillemin. who recently moved back to California from Texas, had his number-12 \z45OF near the front in bo[h motos- After com_ pleting the first lap of the first moto in sixth, Vuillemin actually climbed uP to second and held his ground there for a while, eventually finishin8 the moto in fourth ln the second moto, Vuillemin wa5 again in second off the start but he quickly droPPed back lo fifth, where he would run for much of the race. After gening passed by Honda's Travis Preston, Vuillemin made a late-race charge on the Honda rider, only to come uP a little short His 4- 5 tally was Sood enough for fourth overall. '! He ended up going 7-6 for sixth overall. 14 lGvinwindham 7th Place Kevin Windham had a quiet weekend. The SoBe/Samsung l'4obile/Honda rider had troubles Setting out ofthe 8a!e and rode cautiously throu8h the pack. ln the first moto. Windham rounded the {irst turn in I Oth and in the second moto in 29th ' so he never tot the chance to run with the leaders. Once he got in a groove, Windham steadily and almo6t unnoticeabt worked his way up through the pack to finirh fifth and eiShti for seventh overall. 38 feff Dement 8th Place leff Dement, riding ahe Maestro RacinS/2 wheeloutlet-com Suzuki RM-2450' Sutted out an eighth-place Ilnish. ln the morning practice, Dement was landed on by another ride( which left a nasry gash on his hand [hat needed stitches. He 8o! the hand sewn uP before the first moto, in which he finished I lth. He came back and bettered that by four Positons, Siving him a well-earned eighth overall for the day. I l8 Oavi Millsaps 9th Place Team Honda's Davi Millsaps left the Hangtown National battered and bruised. He crashed hard Pretty much every time he 8ot on the bike over the course of rhe weekend. On Saturday, Millsaps crashed in practice. as well as in his heat race. and on Sunday. he atain crashed in practice and in both motos. Still, Millsaps managed to salvage a 9_ 10 moto tally for ninth overall. Stewart won a thrillinS flrst moto, in which, had it not been for a lastJap pass on Chad Reed, Stewart might not have left with the first-place-overall troPhy. Stewart finished second to Carmichael in the second moto, but that was Sood enough to beat Carmichael's 3-l effort for the day s lop honor. After Pufting ln another strong performance, a disaP- pointed Reed had to seftle for third with a 2-3 tally. 'Just after last year and all of the strug- gles I've always had at this track, to 8et this is such a big weight off my shoulders," Stewart said. "There were not a lot of people that could believe that I'd be here and win this thing and win it like I did. I just have to glve it up to my team - this is the lirst time we've r-aced the 450 in the outdoors, and we 8ot it done." The first Motocross-class moto was a thriller. Carmichael got the iumP off the gate and blasted into the lead, but moments later he lost the front end in the sl'ppery mud through a fast, sweeping corner and went down right in front of the pack. Somehoq Carmichael managed not to get run over, but he reioined the race in dead last - and then some. "Man, I Eot an awesome start, 8ot the holeshot, and I iust went into the flrst turn there," Carmichael said. ''lt was really rough and a liftle wet, and the bottom line was that liust lost the front end. lfell down, 8ot highsided, went off the bike, and I just laid there behind mY bike, scared that somebody was going to hit me- Everybody went by, and lgot uP. After that, I just tried to make up as many spots as possible.'' To his surprise, a few turns later, Carmichael found himself within sight of Stewart, who also had troubles on the first lap. "lt seems like every time Icrash, something happens to [Stewart]," Carmichael said- ''l was surprised to see him. I thought maybe we could freight- train to the front."
